The first issue of the Official UK PlayStation Magazine hit newsstands in November 1995. This launch coincided exactly with the release of the original PlayStation console in the United Kingdom.
The initial print run reached 37,000 copies for that debut edition. Distribution began as a quarterly publication before shifting to a monthly schedule starting from Issue 2.
February 1999 marked a historic peak where issue 42 achieved 453,571 readers according to ABC figures. That specific issue featured Metal Gear Solid on its cover and sales figures surpassed major lifestyle magazines like FHM Maxim and Loaded within the same market.
In 1998 and 1999 the publication won the prestigious Industry Dinner Magazine of the Year Award. The same accolade returned in 2004 when OPSM2 took home the top prize again while MCV awarded the team the Magazine Team of the Year Award in 2004 as well.
The magazine ran for 108 issues until March 2004 when it ceased its original run. A new iteration called Official UK PlayStation 2 Magazine launched in December 2000 to cover the successor console and continued publishing until July 2008 across 100 separate issues.
