Oshi no Ko was written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. It ran in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump from the 23rd of April 2020, to the 14th of November 2024, and was collected in sixteen tankōbon volumes.
Oshi no Ko follows a doctor, Gorou Amamiya, who is murdered and reincarnated as the son of pop idol Ai Hoshino, while his deceased patient is simultaneously reborn as the twin sister, Ruby. After Ai is murdered four years later, the twins enter Japan's entertainment industry to find and confront those responsible.
By December 2025, Oshi no Ko had over 25 million copies in circulation. The series first crossed one million copies in April 2021 and reached twenty million by November 2024.
The first season of the Oshi no Ko anime, produced by Doga Kobo, aired from April 12 to the 28th of June 2023. A fourth and final season has been announced.
Aka Akasaka wrote Oshi no Ko to expose how young entertainers in Japan are hurt and exploited. He was inspired by a friendship with an entertainer who was attacked by a fan and privately admitted the experience had hurt them deeply, despite appearing tough in public.
The ending of Oshi no Ko was controversial. Many fans called it rushed and said the final chapters contradicted the characters' earlier positive development. Critics at Game Rant and Screen Rant acknowledged the criticism had merit while stopping short of condemning the story as a whole.
