Ludwig Göransson was born on the 1st of September 1984 in Linköping, Sweden. He graduated from the Stockholm Royal College of Music and then moved to Los Angeles in 2007 to study at the University of Southern California's Scoring for Motion Picture and Television program.
Ludwig Göransson and Ryan Coogler met as students at the University of Southern California. Göransson composed the score for Coogler's student short film Locks in 2009, beginning a collaboration that extended through Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, Wakanda Forever, and Sinners.
"This Is America," produced by Göransson and Childish Gambino, won in all four of its nominated categories at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance, and Best Music Video. The song debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Göransson traveled to Senegal to research traditional African music and instruments for the Black Panther score. There he met musician Baaba Maal, whose voice, singing in the Fula language, was featured in the finished score. He also visited the International Library of African Music in South Africa, founded by Hugh Tracey, to listen to archival recordings.
Göransson was chosen to score Tenet after Hans Zimmer, Nolan's first choice and frequent collaborator, turned down the offer to work on the 2021 film Dune instead. The announcement came on the 22nd of May 2019, and the first scoring session was held in November 2019.
