Jon Freeman is a game designer and co-founder of Automated Simulations, the company later renamed Epyx. He is best known for co-creating Archon: The Light and the Dark through Free Fall Associates, one of the earliest titles published by Electronic Arts.
Automated Simulations was a software developer co-founded by Jon Freeman and Jim Connelley in 1978. It began when Connelley developed Starfleet Orion to write off the cost of his Commodore PET computer; the pair had to form a company to publish the finished game. Free Fall Associates was founded in 1981 by Jon Freeman, game programmer Anne Westfall (Freeman's wife), and game designer Paul Reiche III. Freeman and Westfall left Epyx together to create the studio.
Free Fall Associates developed Archon: The Light and the Dark and Archon II: Adept for Electronic Arts. Both were originally written for Atari 8-bit computers and later ported to other contemporary home systems. Archon was among the earliest titles released by Electronic Arts.
Jon Freeman met Anne Westfall in 1980 at a computer fair while the company was still called Automated Simulations. Westfall is a game programmer; they later married and have worked together through Free Fall Associates.
