Aguda, later known as Emperor Taizu of Jin, founded the Jin dynasty. He was elected leader of the Jurchens in 1113 and declared himself emperor in the spring of 1115.
The Jurchen people originated from the Mohe people who lived in Northeast China. The Mohe were a primarily sedentary people who practiced hunting and farming, and the Jurchens emerged from the Heishui Mohe in the forested mountain areas of eastern Manchuria and Russia's Primorsky Krai.
The Jurchens rebelled against the Liao dynasty due to violent extortion of annual tribute and the abuse of Jurchen women by Khitan envoys. Aguda refused to dance for the Khitan emperor Tianzuo in the winter of 1112, an act of defiance that ignited the revolution.
