Giannis Sina Ugo Adetokunbo was born on the 6th of December 1994 in a cramped apartment in the Sepolia neighborhood of Athens. His parents fled Lagos without work permits and struggled to find steady employment as undocumented immigrants.
Giannis received Greek citizenship on the 9th of May 2013 just two months before entering the NBA draft. He officially changed his name to Giannis Sina Ougko Antetokounmpo after being issued a passport that year.
Giannis began playing basketball for youth teams at Filathlitikos club in Athens at age twelve. By 2011 he joined the senior men's team competing in the semi-pro Greek B Basket League.
