Eos is the ancient Greek goddess and personification of the dawn. She rose each morning from her home at the edge of the river Oceanus to deliver light and disperse the night, and is the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, sister of the sun god Helios and the moon goddess Selene.
Eos fell in love with the Trojan prince Tithonus and asked Zeus to grant him immortality, but forgot to also request eternal youth. Tithonus aged endlessly without dying until Eos turned him into a cicada. The myth is known as early as Homer and is also the subject of a surviving poem by Sappho.
According to Pseudo-Apollodorus, the goddess Aphrodite cursed Eos with insatiable lust for mortal men as punishment for sleeping with Ares, Aphrodite's lover. This curse was the explanation ancient Greeks gave for Eos's pattern of abducting handsome young men.
Eos is most often called Rhododactylos, meaning rosy-fingered, in the Homeric epics, a reference to the colors of the sky at dawn. She is also called Erigeneia, meaning early-born, and Homer names her two chariot horses Lampus and Phaethon.
Eos shares a name derived from the Proto-Indo-European stem h2ewsos, meaning dawn, with the Vedic goddess Ushas, the Lithuanian Ausrine, and the Roman Aurora. Scholars reconstruct a common Proto-Indo-European dawn goddess ancestor who predates all four of these traditions.
Eos had no known temples, shrines, or altars. The only confirmed traces of worship are wineless offerings made to her at Athens alongside other celestial divinities including Helios, Selene, and Aphrodite Urania. Ovid, writing in the persona of Eos, describes her shrines as the rarest in the world.
