Creators David Carpenter, David Andrew Laws, and Sarah Davis Reynolds developed The Twenty-Sided Tavern as a Dungeons and Dragons-style production. Both creators were long-time players of the game who initially marketed it without an official license during the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 2021.
Audience members participate through browser-based voting software designed by Gamiotics that determines cast actions and adventure outcomes. This technology allows viewers to select character archetypes from a shortlist pulled from 33 total characters while monitors display branching scenarios dependent on each decision or dice roll.
The Twenty-Sided Tavern premiered at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera in 2022 before moving to runs in Chicago and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The production later opened at Stage 42 in New York City in May 2024 and hosted performances at the Sydney Opera House Studio venue starting in December 2024.
Guest appearances included Felicia Day in September 2024, Aabria Iyengar from October 2024 through February-March 2025, Travis McElroy in November 2024 and March 2025, and Erika Ishii in December 2024.
