The Berserk 2016 anime covers the Conviction arc from Kentaro Miura's manga. A second season, which began airing on the 7th of April 2017, covers the first half of the Hawk of the Millennium Empire arc.
Shin Itagaki directed the Berserk 2016 series. Shirō Sagisu composed the score, returning from the Golden Age Arc films, while Susumu Hirasawa contributed two songs including "Ash Crow".
Producer Reo Kurosu described the approach as a hybrid between 2D and 3D animation. 3D characters were rendered with cel shading and a linear hatching effect on shadows to match the look of hand-drawn 2D art.
The first season premiered on the 1st of July 2016 on Wowow in Japan. It later aired on MBS's Animeism block, TBS, CBC, and BS-TBS, and was simulcast on Crunchyroll.
The English dub was produced by Bang Zoom! Entertainment and distributed by Funimation. Crunchyroll announced the Blu-ray and DVD release at Anime Expo on the 1st of July 2016, and the first season became available through Funimation on the 20th of March 2017.
Critical opinion was divided. IGN's Meghan Sullivan gave the premiere an 8.5 out of 10. Anime News Network's Jacob Hope Chapman described the production as abominably ugly, criticizing cut-rate CGI and disorienting camera work, while still crediting Miura's source story for keeping the show watchable.
