Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician and writer who lived from the 10th of December 1815 to the 27th of November 1852. She is chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's proposed analytical engine and is often considered the first computer programmer.
Ada Lovelace was born on the 10th of December 1815 and died on the 27th of November 1852, at the age of 36. Her death was caused by cervical cancer, which doctors at the time called uterine cancer.
Ada Lovelace translated Luigi Menabrea's article on Charles Babbage's analytical engine and added seven explanatory notes of her own. The seventh, Note G, described a complete method for calculating a sequence of Bernoulli numbers on the machine, an algorithm often called the first published computer program.
Ada Lovelace's father was the poet Lord Byron, who separated from her mother, Anne Isabella Milbanke, about a month after Ada was born. Byron died in April 1824 when Ada was eight years old, and she never had a relationship with him.
Ada Lovelace wrote that the analytical engine 'has no pretensions whatever to originate anything' and could only do what it was explicitly ordered to perform. Alan Turing later named this claim 'Lady Lovelace's Objection' in his own paper on machine intelligence.
Ada Lovelace is commemorated in the Ada programming language, created for the United States Department of Defense, and in the British Computer Society's Lovelace Medal. Ada Lovelace Day has been held every October since 2009, and a statue of her was unveiled in Westminster, London, in 2022.
