  • Ada Lovelace was born on the 10th of December 1815, the only legitimate child of the poet Lord Byron. In 1843, Charles Babbage wrote to her: 'Forget this world and all its troubles and if possible its multitudinous Charlatans, every thing in short but the Enchantress of Number.' Babbage was the inventor of the analytical engine, a proposed mechanical computer that Lovelace had spent years helping him explain to the world. The engine itself was never built. Decades after Lovelace's death, though, her writings about it would be read as an early description of what a computer program could do. Was she really the first person to write one, as she is often credited today, or is that a title history attached to her later? And how did a woman largely kept apart from her famous father end up at the center of a debate that mathematicians and historians still have not settled?

  • Lord Byron wanted a 'glorious boy', and made his disappointment plain when his wife gave birth to a girl. The couple named her Ada, after Byron's half-sister Augusta Leigh, though it was Byron himself who used that shortened name. On the 16th of January 1816, acting on Byron's own command, Lady Byron left for her parents' home at Kirkby Mallory, taking their five-week-old daughter with her. English law of the time gave a father full custody after separation, yet Byron never tried to claim it; he asked only that his sister keep him informed of Ada's welfare. He signed the deed of separation on the 21st of April, reluctantly, and left England for good within days. Lady Byron spent the rest of her life making allegations about her husband's conduct, and the fallout made Lovelace infamous in Victorian society. Ada never had a relationship with her father. He died in April 1824, when she was eight, and she was not shown a family portrait of him until her 20th birthday.

    Lovelace's maternal grandmother, Lady Milbanke, doted on her, filling a role her own mother rarely did. Social attitudes of the era favored the husband in any separation, so Lady Byron had to keep up appearances as a devoted parent. She wrote anxious letters to Lady Milbanke about her daughter's welfare, telling her to keep them in case she ever needed proof of maternal concern. In one such letter she referred to her own daughter only as 'it': 'I talk to it for your satisfaction, not my own, and shall be very glad when you have it under your own.' As a teenager, Ada was watched by family friends her mother had assigned to report on her conduct. Lovelace nicknamed them the 'Furies', and said afterward that they exaggerated, and sometimes invented, stories about her.

    At the age of eight, Lovelace began suffering headaches severe enough to blur her vision. In June 1829, a bout of measles left her paralyzed, and she was confined to bed for nearly a year, a stretch that may have made her disability worse. Not until 1831 could she walk again, with the help of crutches. None of it stopped her from building her mathematical and technical skills.

    At twelve, in a project Charles Babbage later remembered by nicknaming her his 'Lady Fairy', Ada decided she wanted to fly. She tested paper, oiled silk, wire, and feathers as possible wing materials, and studied the anatomy of birds to judge the right proportions. She wrote up her findings in an illustrated book she called Flyology, and planned equipment down to a compass, so she could, in her words, 'cut across the country by the most direct road'. Her final step was to combine steam power with what she called the 'art of flying'. That same restless streak resurfaced in early 1833, when Ada had an affair with a tutor and tried to elope with him after she was caught; his relatives recognised her and alerted her mother, who covered up the incident before it became a public scandal. Lovelace never met her younger half-sister Allegra, Lord Byron's daughter with Claire Clairmont, who died in 1822 at the age of five. She had some contact with Elizabeth Medora Leigh, Augusta Leigh's daughter, though Medora went out of her way to avoid her at court. None of that youthful trouble stopped Ada from being presented at Court within a few years, where a very different kind of attention awaited her.

  • At seventeen, Ada was presented at Court and became, as contemporaries put it, a popular belle of the season, credited with a brilliant mind. Byron's old friend John Hobhouse met her on the 24th of February 1834 and described her as 'a large, coarse-skinned young woman', though he noted something of Byron's own features in her mouth. Ada made her dislike of Hobhouse obvious at that meeting, probably echoing her mother's feelings toward her father's friends, though the two later became friends.

    On the 8th of July 1835, Ada married William, 8th Baron King, becoming Lady King. The couple kept three homes: Ockham Park in Surrey, a Scottish estate on Loch Torridon, and a house in London. They honeymooned at Ashley Combe, near Porlock Weir in Somerset, a hunting lodge built in 1799 that King had improved for the occasion. It later became their summer retreat. From 1845, their main house was Horsley Towers, designed in the Tudorbethan style by Charles Barry, the architect of the Houses of Parliament. It was later enlarged to Ada's own designs. They had three children: Byron, born in 1836; Annabella, born in 1837; and Ralph Gordon, born in 1839. Ada was descended from the extinct Barons Lovelace, and in 1838 her husband's new title as Earl of Lovelace made her Countess of Lovelace.

    In 1843, Ada's mother assigned William Benjamin Carpenter to tutor the children and to act as a kind of moral instructor for Ada herself. Carpenter instead fell for her, and encouraged her to voice any frustrated affections, insisting his own marriage meant he would never act improperly. When it became clear he was angling for an affair, Ada cut it off. Two years earlier, in 1841, her mother had told both Ada and Elizabeth Medora Leigh that Lord Byron was Medora's father as well as Ada's. Ada wrote back on the 27th of February: 'I am not in the least astonished. In fact, you merely confirm what I have for years and years felt scarcely a doubt about, but should have considered it most improper in me to hint to you that I in any way suspected.' She refused to blame her father, telling her mother instead of Augusta Leigh, 'I fear she is more inherently wicked than he ever was.'

    In the later 1840s, Ada lost more than 3,000 pounds betting on horses, at a time when rumours of affairs were already complicating her reputation. She built a syndicate of male friends to back her wagers, and in 1851 tried to devise a mathematical system for placing large, successful bets. The scheme collapsed, leaving her thousands of pounds in debt to her own syndicate and forcing her to confess everything to her husband. She had also kept a quiet, closely guarded relationship since 1844 with John, the son of the electrical engineer Andrew Crosse, one that would matter even more once her health began to fail.

  • From 1832, when she was seventeen, mathematics began to dominate the rest of Ada's adult life. Her mother was fixated on rooting out any trace of the 'insanity' she blamed on Byron, and that fixation was part of why Ada had been taught mathematics from such an early age. She learned privately from William Frend, from her own husband William King, and from Mary Somerville, the noted nineteenth-century researcher and scientific author. In the 1840s, the mathematician Augustus De Morgan gave her, in his own words, 'much help in her mathematical studies'. That included advanced calculus and the numbers of Bernoulli. De Morgan told Lady Byron that Ada's skill might make her 'an original mathematical investigator, perhaps of first-rate eminence'.

    While studying differential calculus, Lovelace wrote to De Morgan about how certain formulae could transform in ways that seemed almost impossible to a beginner. She compared it to 'certain sprites and fairies one reads of, who are at one's elbows in one shape now, and the next minute in a form most dissimilar'. She believed intuition and imagination mattered as much as calculation. She valued metaphysics as highly as mathematics, treating both as ways of exploring what she called 'the unseen worlds around us'. That same appetite for connecting distant ideas would soon meet its biggest test, in the workshop of a mathematician named Charles Babbage.

  • Lovelace first met Charles Babbage in June 1833, introduced by their mutual friend Mary Somerville. Later that same month, Babbage invited her to see the prototype of his difference engine, and she became fascinated by the machine. She used her friendship with Somerville to visit Babbage as often as she could, and Babbage was struck by her intellect and analytic skill.

    In 1840, Babbage travelled to the University of Turin to give a seminar on his Analytical Engine. Luigi Menabrea, a young Italian engineer who later became Prime Minister of Italy, transcribed the lecture into French, and it was published in the Bibliotheque universelle de Geneve in October 1842. Babbage's friend Charles Wheatstone then commissioned Lovelace to translate Menabrea's paper into English. Over nine months in 1842-43, she did far more than translate; she added seven notes, labelled A to G, that ran about three times longer than the article itself. The translation and notes appeared in the September 1843 edition of Taylor's Scientific Memoirs, credited only to her initials, AAL.

    Michael Faraday later described himself as a supporter of Lovelace's writing, at a time when many scientists struggled to grasp the Analytical Engine at all and Britain's scientific establishment showed little interest in Babbage's invention. Babbage and Lovelace nearly fell out over the publication itself, when he tried to add his own unsigned statement criticising the government's treatment of his engine, which could have been mistaken for a joint declaration. When the journal insisted the statement be signed, Babbage asked Lovelace to withdraw her paper entirely; she refused. Their friendship survived the disagreement, and they continued to correspond for years afterward. Buried in the seventh of those notes, labelled G, was something that would outlast the argument over its preface: a complete method for calculating a sequence of numbers on a machine that was never built.

  • Note G laid out, in full detail, a method for calculating a sequence of Bernoulli numbers on the Analytical Engine, one that might have worked correctly had the machine ever been built. Babbage's own notes from 1837 to 1840 already contained early programs for the engine, but historians often call the algorithm in Note G the first published computer program. Since the engine itself was never completed, the program was never actually tested. In 1953, more than a century after Lovelace died, her notes on the Analytical Engine were republished as an appendix to B. V. Bowden's book Faster than Thought: A Symposium on Digital Computing Machines, and the engine has since been recognised as an early model for both a computer and its software.

    In her notes, Lovelace was the first to point out that the machine could handle more than plain arithmetic, including music. She imagined that if the relationships behind musical harmony could be expressed the way numbers could, 'the engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent'. The historian Walter Isaacson traces part of this insight to something she had seen firsthand: mechanical looms that used punched cards to weave patterns, which reminded her of how Babbage's engine used punched cards to calculate.

  • Bruce Collier wrote that Lovelace 'made a considerable contribution to publicizing the Analytical Engine, but there is no evidence that she advanced the design or theory of it in any way'. In a Scientific American article, Eugene Eric Kim and the Lovelace biographer Betty Alexandra Toole argued it was 'incorrect' to call her the first computer programmer. Babbage himself claimed credit for the Note G algorithm in his own autobiography.

    The historian Allan G. Bromley found several dozen sample programs that Babbage had prepared between 1837 and 1840, all predating Lovelace's notes by three to seven years. Bromley wrote that Ada never prepared a program of her own for the Analytical Engine, and that her correspondence with Babbage shows she lacked the knowledge to do so; the one program Babbage wrote specifically for her did contain a 'bug' that she caught. The historian Dorothy K. Stein went further, describing Lovelace's notes as more a reflection of mathematical uncertainty and political circumstance than a genuine 'blueprint for a scientific development'.

    The historian Doron Swade has argued that Lovelace published the first computer program rather than actually writing it herself, while still crediting her as the only person to see the Analytical Engine's potential beyond mere numbers. In his book Idea Makers, Stephen Wolfram pushed back on the doubters, calling her computation of the Bernoulli numbers more sophisticated than anything Babbage had produced, and describing her as 'definitely the driver' of the work, even though Babbage helped and commented on it. None of that argument was settled by the time cancer began to take hold of Lovelace in the early 1850s.

  • Lovelace died on the 27th of November 1852, at the age of 36, from cervical cancer, which doctors at the time called uterine cancer since the two were not yet distinguished. The illness lasted several months, during which Lady Byron took control of who could see her daughter and shut out Ada's friends and confidants. Under her mother's influence, Ada underwent a religious transformation, repented her past conduct, and named Lady Byron her executor. On the 30th of August, she confessed something to her husband that caused him to abandon her bedside; what she told him has never been known. She was buried, at her own request, beside her father at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. During her final illness, she panicked at the idea of being kept apart from John Crosse, and after her death he destroyed most of their correspondence as part of a legal agreement; she had left him the only heirlooms her father had personally given her.

    The programming language Ada, created for the United States Department of Defense, was named for her, and its military standard number, 1815, matches the year of her birth. The British Computer Society awards a Lovelace Medal, the Association for Women in Computing gives an Ada Lovelace Award, and Ada Lovelace Day has been held every October since 2009 to highlight women in science and technology. As of November 2015, all new British passports have featured an illustration of Lovelace and Babbage, and in 2018 The New York Times ran a belated obituary for her. In 2022, a statue of Lovelace was unveiled in Westminster, London, and Nvidia later named a graphics processor architecture after her, the first of its architectures to carry both a first and last name. In 2025, the National Portrait Gallery acquired the only three known photographs of Lovelace: two daguerreotypes taken around 1843, and a later image of a portrait, finally giving a documented face to a woman whose calculations had outlived every machine built to run them.
