  • The University of Florida Press opened its doors in 1945 within the state of Florida. This new entity stood about four miles from the main campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Its first publication was a book titled Florida Under Five Flags by Rembert Patrick. That volume served as a centennial history of the state and set the tone for future work. The press committed itself to books about the region from that very beginning. It became the oldest book publisher operating within the state boundaries.

  • Other public universities in Florida noticed the success of the initial program around 1973. They established their own presses to follow suit. The Florida Board of Regents intervened to prevent duplication of efforts among these campuses. They created a decentralized system-wide consortium known as the University Presses of Florida. This structure featured independent editorial and financial controls on each of the nine state system campuses. By the early 1990s, leaders saw a need for one central authority. They reconfigured the consortium into a single press called the University Press of Florida. A single editorial board now oversaw all operations under one budget.

  • Lewis F Haines guided the organization from 1945 until 1967. William B. Harvey took over the role from 1967 through 1978. Phillip Martin led the press between 1978 and 1987. George C. Bedell served as director from 1987 to 1994. Kenneth J. Scott held the position from 1994 until 2004. Meredith Morris-Babb directed operations starting in 2005 and continuing through 2019. Romi Gutierrez assumed leadership in 2019 and remains in that post today. These individuals steered the press through four decades of administrative changes.

  • The press has published almost 2,500 volumes with a staff of 41 people. It releases about 100 new titles each year across various disciplines. International studies, archaeology, dance, history, literature, and political science form part of its list. The organization ranks in the top-third of member presses for sales and new title production. Books from the press have received awards from many academic organizations. They also earned Choice Outstanding Book designations and Association of University Presses design awards. Some titles appeared on Amazon.com's best-seller list or were chosen for book clubs.

  • UPF underwent a total conversion to electronic editing and production methods. This shift allowed them to maintain efficient schedules and procedures for releasing books. The press now publishes Orange Grove Texts Plus which are Open Access textbooks. These texts exist within an Open Access repository powered by SobekCM Open Source software. UPF authors sometimes grant materials for their publications to be available as Open Access. Many works remain accessible from the University of Florida Digital Collections.

  • Gainesville Sun hailed the organization as a publishing powerhouse in 2006. Starred reviews appeared in Publishers Weekly regarding specific titles. A featured essay about their work ran in the New York Times Book Review. Major attention came from the New York Review of Books and the Times Literary Supplement. The Village Voice, The Nation, Playboy, and Oxford American also covered their output. Various wire services reported on their achievements. Both academic and general interest books received accolades from national and international media outlets.
