  Inside Control Machete, a Mexican hip hop group, Antonio Hernández first built his reputation as a DJ. Within that ensemble, he went by 'Toy' and, later, 'DJ Toy.' Those names suited the arrangement: a DJ working within a band, responsible for the group's sound rather than a solo catalogue. In 2008, he left that framework behind. He adopted Toy Selectah as his stage name. Under that name, he took on production, song arranging, original composition, and live remixes. In 2001, he was already producing music for other artists, seven years before the name change formalized that role.

  In 2001, Toy Selectah produced 'Cumbia sobre el río' for the musician Celso Piña. That production offered an early window into what his style would become. Mexican cumbia sits at the core of his approach, placed alongside hip hop and electronic music. He draws from a wide range of other Latin American subgenres as well, treating the full spectrum as a single working vocabulary. Those same instincts would follow him into the institutional side of his career, where he helped shape how one genre reached the world.

  As artistic director of Machete Music, a sub-label of Universal Music Group, Toy Selectah sat at the center of reggaeton's international expansion. The label's work influenced how the genre traveled from its origins to listeners worldwide. That role was institutional, but Toy Selectah did not limit himself to one kind of operation. He also owns the Sones del Mexside label, a venture separate from any major-label structure. That dual position, inside a global corporation and independent of it, shaped the collaborations that followed.

  MIA, Cypress Hill, Santa Fe Klan, Thievery Corporation, Café Tacuba, and Manu Chao have all worked with Toy Selectah. His contributions span production, arranging, and live remix work. Together, those names reach across multiple genres and more than one country. He approached each project not as a featured performer but as a producer and arranger brought in to shape the sound. One collaboration took a different form altogether: a co-founded project with another producer, built from scratch rather than assembled around an existing artist.

  Toy Selectah founded Compass alongside Camilo Lara of the Mexican Institute of Sound. Unlike his other collaborations, this one placed him as a co-creator of original music rather than a contributor to someone else's project. The pair released an album together in 2016. That record put both men's names forward as authors, not as one artist working with an outside producer. Compass placed both producers on equal footing. Nothing in his career to that point had given him exactly that arrangement.
