  • In June 2021, New Line Cinema announced a fast-tracked anime film to secure the rights to J. R. R. Tolkien's novels before they expired. The studio feared losing the adaptation license for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings if no new project was developed quickly. Director Kenji Kamiyama joined the production early alongside producer Joseph Chou from their previous work on Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Producer Philippa Boyens returned as a consultant after co-writing Peter Jackson's live-action trilogy. Writers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews drafted the initial screenplay during the pandemic lockdowns. Later, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou rewrote the script to better fit the anime medium. The producers chose this era because it avoids the One Ring while exploring the history of Rohan's rulers found in the appendices. Sola Entertainment provided the traditional animation style inspired by Jackson's films rather than earlier animated versions.

  • King Helm Hammerhand sits upon his throne when Freca arrives with his son Wulf to demand marriage between Héra and Wulf. A fistfight erupts outside the hall where Helm unintentionally kills Freca with a single blow. This act earns him the nickname Hammerhand and sparks a war that lasts through the winter. Wulf leaves devastated and returns years later as High Lord of the Dunlendings to seek revenge. He invades Rohan and besieges the Hornburg fortress while Helm prepares for battle against overwhelming odds. During the siege, Helm sneaks out at night using a secret passage to kill Wulf's forces with only his fists. He dies frozen standing up while covering Héra's escape from the burning stronghold. Héra then challenges Wulf to combat on the siege-tower bridge wearing an old bridal dress. She defeats him and chokes him to death with her shield to end the war forever.

  • Philippa Boyens brought writers Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou into the project during the pandemic lockdowns. They were hesitant to join due to the reverence fans held for Tolkien's source material and previous films. The pair convinced themselves to work on the film after learning about other creatives involved from Jackson's trilogy. Kamiyama wanted to include details like how to lay siege to a citadel which did not fit the initial script. He worked with Gittins and Papageorgiou to focus on darker elements rather than just large-scale battles. The writers decided to use Éowyn as a narrator telling the story through oral tradition. This choice helped provide context for viewers unfamiliar with Tolkien's wider history. Walsh suggested naming the protagonist Héra based on actress Hera Hilmar who starred in Mortal Engines. The name was spelled differently to reflect Old English origins without referencing Greek mythology.

  • Sola Entertainment began animation work by June 2021 using a unique process combining motion capture with traditional drawing. Actors performed every scene using motion capture which was translated into 3D animation within Unreal Engine. The 3D environment determined camera angles before being converted into final 2D drawings. Kamiyama refused to use rotoscoping to trace over the 3D scenes directly. Artists used the 3D version only as reference when creating their hand-drawn illustrations. This method created fluid movements while maintaining the feeling of traditional animation. Richard Taylor returned from Wētā Workshop along with illustrators Alan Lee and John Howe. They designed locations like Edoras and Isengard using old models from Jackson's archives. More than 60 companies helped finish the animation work by late October 2024. The team faced challenges animating horses which are notoriously difficult to render in any medium.

  • Héra rides her horse through the forest lake where she lures a rabid mûmakil to be eaten by a Watcher in the Water. She wears a beautiful old bridal dress to challenge Wulf on the siege-tower bridge during the invasion. Her character arc focuses on choices that impact her life rather than becoming a standard warrior princess trope. Wulf stands as a human antagonist seeking revenge for his father's death at Helm's hands. He leads hill-tribe rebels who attack Rohan after Freca dies in the fistfight. Fréaláf Hildeson appears as Helm's nephew who eventually inherits the throne despite having no known mother. His parentage creates uncertainty about whether he is fully Rohirric or part-Dunlending. Olwyn guides Héra away from ruling to seek adventure instead of staying in the kingdom. Éowyn narrates the story as a future shieldmaiden who questions the orcs hunting for rings.

  • Stephen Gallagher composed the score for The War of the Rohirrim by February 2023 continuing Howard Shore's musical themes. Recording sessions began in March 2024 with the New Zealand-based Stroma ensemble providing wind and string instruments. Brass instruments and taiko drums were recorded at Angel Recording Studios in London during the same month. Crumhorns and shawms were captured at Air-Edel Recording Studios while Karen Bentley Pollick played the Hardanger fiddle remotely from Mexico. The Tudor Consort choral group joined recording efforts in May alongside harpist Michelle Velvin and singer Barbara Paterson. Final sessions wrapped on August 28 after work continued through multiple studios including Park Road Post in Wellington. An original song titled The Rider was performed by Paris Paloma and released digitally on November 15. The soundtrack album featuring Gallagher's complete score arrived in December following the film's release.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim grossed $20.7 million worldwide against a production budget of $30 million. It earned $9.2 million in the United States and Canada plus $11.5 million in other territories. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of B on an A+ to F scale. Maya Phillips of The New York Times compared it to a video game side quest that succeeds at recreating the fantasy world. Zachary Lee wrote for RogerEbert.com giving the film two stars out of four due to rushed execution. He called it a ghastly imitation of better films despite praising the voice cast and fight sequences. The film premiered in Leicester Square London on December 3 before releasing internationally from December 5. It became available on digital platforms just 14 days after its theatrical debut in the United States. The movie received nominations for sound editing and original score at major industry awards ceremonies.
