  • Brian Epstein arranged for the band to travel from Liverpool to London on New Year's Eve 1961. Neil Aspinall drove the group down in a van, but he lost his way during the journey. The trip took ten hours to complete before they arrived at their destination. They reached London at 10 p.m., just as John Lennon described seeing drunks jumping into the Trafalgar Square fountain. Decca Studios sat less than a mile away from EMI's studio later known as Abbey Road. The band members had been rejected by many record companies including Columbia and Pye before this specific appointment.

  • John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best entered the studio at 10 a.m. on the 1st of January 1962. Mike Smith was late due to a hangover and injuries from a car crash three days prior to Christmas. Standard procedure dictated recording only two or five songs before sending artists home. The Beatles performed fifteen songs instead over an extended afternoon session broken by lunch. Mark Lewisohn postulated that the group likely received no chance to perform more than one take of any song. Each track was recorded live on two-track tape without overdubs. An acetate 45 made by Decca contained the song Like Dreamers Do.

  • Decca executives decided against signing the band about a month after the audition took place. Their opinion stated guitar groups were on the way out and the Beatles had no future in show business. Dick Rowe denied making the comment throughout his life despite Epstein attributing it to him in 1964. Decca signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead because they were local and required lower travel expenses. Mike Smith traveled to Liverpool to see them perform at The Cavern Club before inviting them for this test. Some historians suggest the rejection may have been intended as a polite letdown rather than a harsh judgment.

  • Dick Rowe offered to arrange for Tony Meehan to produce a Beatles single if Epstein would pay about £100 for expenses. A meeting between Epstein and Meehan occurred on the 7th of February but went badly. The recording never took place after that failed discussion. Epstein also approached an EMI marketing executive named Ron White during these negotiations. White contacted three producers including Norrie Paramor, Walter Ridley, and Norman Newell who all declined to record the group. They eventually signed with Parlophone after George Martin heard the Decca demos and decided to meet the band.

  • The rejection was parodied in the Rutles movie All You Need Is Cash released in 1978. Dan Aykroyd played a record executive named Brian Thigh who turned down the Rutles. Eric Idle asked Thigh what it felt like to be such an asshole after ruminating over lost royalties. The 1995 documentary film The Beatles Anthology included snippets from many songs performed at the audition. The album Anthology 1 released that same year contained five of those songs plus other outtakes. These tracks included Searchin', Like Dreamers Do, Hello Little Girl, Three Cool Cats, and The Sheik of Araby.

  • The original safety master tape auctioned by the Fame Bureau in December 2012 sold for £35,000 to a Japanese collector. A spokesman stated the tape went to a Capitol Records executive before being sold to a Hard Rock Cafe buyer. Experts debate the authenticity because the auction recording contains only ten songs while the actual session had fifteen. The tape used Ampex material which was not in use during 1962. Another audition tape with fifteen songs appeared in a Vancouver record shop on the 11th of March 2025. Frith handed this new discovery over to Paul McCartney in September.
