The boxed set includes three distinct 64-page sourcebooks: the Astral Adventurer's Guide, Boo's Astral Menagerie, and Light of Xaryxis. The Astral Adventurer's Guide details rules for space travel and new player races while Boo's Astral Menagerie serves as a bestiary of 72 creatures.
The Astral Adventurer's Guide introduced six new player races: the Astral Elf, Autognome, Giff, Hadozee, Plasmoid, and Thri-Kreen. These races include living constructs, hippopotamus-like creatures, primate-like spacefaring mammals, living blobs of energy, and insectoid hunters.
Controversy centered on the Hadozee player race because fans identified parallels to the Black experience and the history of slavery in the United States and abroad. The original text described an origin where a wizard magically uplifted them to sapience to sell them as warrior slaves.
Wizards of the Coast issued an apology on the 2nd of September 2022 and removed offensive content from digital and future print editions. The studio announced a new inclusion review process in November 2022 requiring every word, illustration, and map to be reviewed by multiple outside cultural consultants.
Wizards of the Coast released a soundtrack titled Spelljams on the 16th of August 2022 and four themed physical two-disk LP vinyl records. The product also included 47 pre-painted miniatures released by WizKids and an introductory adventure module called Spelljammer Academy.
