  Sango, born Kai Asa Savon Wright on the 1st of October 1991, is an American DJ and record producer based in Seattle, Washington. In 2025, he was announced as one of the remixers assigned to the 2026 FIFA World Cup theme, representing Seattle.

  That credit sits on top of a career built between two American states. It also rests on a stage name borrowed from a Japanese manga, and a sound stitched from jazz, soul, and Brazilian funk. Where did that name come from? Which producers shaped his sound? And what does his catalog of solo releases actually include?

• 2. Two Cities, One Name

  At age nine, Wright moved with his family from Seattle to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 2015, he graduated from Western Michigan University with a BFA in graphic design. Shortly after graduating, he moved back to Seattle, the city where he was born.

  His stage name, Sango, comes from a female character in the anime and manga series Inuyasha.

  Wright married Angela Lopez-Wright in 2015, the same year he graduated. In September 2016, he announced the birth of their first child, a boy born on the 17th of that month. That homecoming set the stage for a sound shaped largely by the people who raised him.

• 3. Family And The Soulection Sound

  Flying Lotus, the Los Angeles jazz and electronic producer, stands as Sango's single biggest influence, discovered during his teenage years. Sango has described his own sound as a product of growing up on the internet, pulling together scattered and unrelated musical influences. He frequently credits his parents, both musicians themselves, as the reason he started making beats at all. His mother, a pianist, trumpeter, and drummer, appears on his debut album North, on the song 'Until Saturday,' which also features Australian producer Ta-ku. His 2011 EP Also Tracey is named for her and dedicated to her as well.

  House, techno, and hip-hop make up Sango's main genres, all built from heavy jazz and soul sampling in keeping with the Soulection collective. He has contributed production to R&B singers Tinashe, Ravyn Lenae, and Bryson Tiller; pop singers PinkPantheress and Christina Aguilera; and rappers Wale, MadeinTYO, and Smino.

  Brazil is another deep influence on his catalog. Sango first discovered it through the Call of Duty video game series, long before baile funk became part of his sound.

• 4. Dancehall And Ten Teachers

  Dancehall is another genre Sango says he loves. Sango has named ten more producers as influences on his production. They are Kaytranada, Mount Kimbie, James Blake, Timbaland, J Dilla, The Neptunes, DJ Quik, Drake producer Noah '40' Shebib, Madlib, and Jake One.

  That range of influences echoes across three studio albums and dozens of shorter releases in Sango's catalog.

• 5. A Growing Discography

  Sango's first release, the EP Unfinished & Satisfied, came out in 2010. The following year brought four more EPs: As Always, Sounds of Chimera, Also Tracey, and There's Eugene. He also released the mixtape More Balloons, a collection of Weeknd remixes, that same year. In 2012, he released Trust Me, Otra Vez, and the first Da Rocinha EP, launching a series that ran for eight more years. His debut studio album, North, followed in 2013. Two more EPs arrived in 2014, Until Then with Waldo and Da Rocinha 2. In 2015, he put out Hours Spent Loving You with Xavier Omär, a compilation titled 2009-2012 Tapes, and Da Rocinha 3.

  Two releases came out in 2016, Mais Mais Mais and Tomorrow, the latter made with Dave B. The next year brought De Mim, Pra Você. His second studio album, In the Comfort Of, arrived in 2018. The year 2019 was his busiest yet. He put out Make Me Well, Acima with VHOOR, and the three-part Calder Program Series. He also released a second volume of Moments Spent Loving You with Xavier Omär and Grove, made with Waldo and Savon. In 2020, he released four projects: Fufu & Grits with Juls, SANGOZINHO, Da Rocinha 4, and SHANGO.

  Sango returned to a familiar collaborator in 2021, releasing MearlGo and MearlGo Vol. 2 with Earlly Mac. He also put out Lake Effect with Waldo and a third MearlGo volume that same year. Great Lakes Influence followed in 2022. A fourth MearlGo volume with Earlly Mac came out in 2023. His third studio album, North Vol. 2, arrived in 2024, over a decade after the original North. Sango has also remixed two Frank Ocean songs, 'Cayendo' and 'Nights.' Both remixes remain without a listed release date, the only gap in an otherwise year-by-year record of his output.
