• 1. Early Life And Youth Career

  Rudy Gobert-Bourgarel was born on the 26th of June 1992 in Saint-Quentin, a town in northern France. His father played college basketball for the Marist Red Foxes between 1985 and 1988 before turning professional in Paris and Saint-Quentin. The couple met while his mother lived in that same region. They separated when Rudy was around three years old, leaving him to stay with his mother while he made regular trips to Guadeloupe to see his father. He began playing organized basketball in 2003 for the JSC St-Quentin club. By 2007, he had moved up to Cholet Basket's cadet categories training center. In 2010, he represented the French under-18 national team at the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. He finished as both the best scorer and rebounder for that squad.

• 2. NBA Draft And Rookie Development

  Gobert declared for the 2013 NBA draft after his time in European youth systems. At the 2013 combine, he set records for wingspan measuring seven feet eight inches and standing reach reaching nine feet seven inches. These measurements earned him the nickname The Stifle Tower. On the 27th of June 2013, the Denver Nuggets selected him with the 27th overall pick. He was traded on draft night to the Utah Jazz instead. Gobert signed his rookie scale contract on July 6 of that year. He joined the team for the 2013 NBA Summer League shortly after. His first season saw him play sparingly, appearing in just 45 of the team's 82 regular season games. He scored a season-high 10 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder during his 12th game. The Jazz assigned him to the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League on December 14. He recorded a double-double in six of those eight games before being recalled by Utah later that month.

  The 2016, 17 season marked a turning point when Gobert signed a four-year, $102 million contract extension. That deal made him the best paid French athlete ever at the time. He became the NBA blocks leader that same season while also earning his first All-NBA Second Team selection. In May 2018, he won his first NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. This made him the first Jazz player to win the honor since Mark Eaton last took it home in 1989. Gobert repeated as winner in 2019 and again in 2021. By June 2021, he had become the fourth player in history to win the award three or more times. His dominance continued into the 2023, 24 season when he claimed a fourth title. This tied him with Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace for the most awards in league history. He also led the league in rebounds per game during the 2021, 22 season with an average of 14.7 rebounds.

  On the 11th of March 2020, a scheduled game between the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder was postponed right before tip-off. Gobert had been placed on the injury list due to illness and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. The virus responsible for the pandemic caused the NBA to suspend the entire season indefinitely. Just two days earlier, he had facetiously touched every microphone at a press conference regarding the team's response. He later apologized, calling his actions careless and exposing others to disease. His relationship with teammate Donovan Mitchell soured following this incident, and they did not speak for some time. Gobert donated $500,000 to help people affected by the crisis including part-time employees and services related to the outbreak. He was cleared of the coronavirus on the 27th of March 2020.

• 5. Trade To Minnesota Timberwolves

  Gobert was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves on the 6th of July 2022. The deal sent Patrick Beverley, Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, and draft rights to Walker Kessler to Utah along with four first-round picks and a 2026 pick swap. He made his debut on October 20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, recording 23 points and 16 rebounds in a win. Two weeks later he posted 22 points and 21 rebounds against the Los Angeles Lakers. This marked his eighth career 20/20 game and first while playing for Minnesota. An altercation occurred during a game against the New Orleans Pelicans on the 9th of April 2023. Gobert swung at teammate Kyle Anderson after a verbal exchange on the sideline. He was escorted away from the court and suspended for one game the following day.

• 6. International Success With France

  Gobert represented France across multiple international tournaments starting in 2011. He won bronze medals at the 2011 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship and silver at the 2012 edition. At the senior level, he helped France secure bronze at the 2014 FIBA World Cup where he averaged 4.1 points per game. The team took home another bronze medal at EuroBasket 2015. In Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Olympic Games, he played five games averaging 5.7 points and 7.2 rebounds. France won silver at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 with Gobert guiding the squad to that result. They also claimed silver at EuroBasket 2022 before winning another silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. His contributions included All-Tournament Team selections and significant statistical output across these campaigns.
