Rubber Soul
In August 1965, the Beatles played to over 55,000 fans at Shea Stadium in New York. That same month, they met Bob Dylan in New York City and Elvis Presley in Los Angeles. These encounters marked a turning point for the group. They returned to London with new ideas about music and life. The band had just released Help! but needed a new album for Christmas. Brian Epstein, their manager, set this schedule back in 1963 alongside producer George Martin. During their American tour, they heard Motown and Stax records on US radio. They also listened to folk rock from Dylan and the Byrds. Robert Rodriguez noted how the Byrds took British sounds, added their own twist, and sent it back. This exchange created a shared pool of influence among these artists. Ringo Starr later called Rubber Soul their departure record. He said marijuana helped them expand into different attitudes. Paul McCartney lived in central London while others did not. He described moving away from alcohol toward a beatnik scene like jazz. John Lennon viewed the album as his pot album. Recording began on the 12th of October 1965 at EMI Studios in London. Final mixing ended on the 15th of November after thirteen days of work totaling 113 hours.
