Royal Society of Chemistry
The Royal Society of Chemistry keeps a ceremonial badge for its president: a spoked wheel centered on a hexagonal medallion. The medallion shows Joseph Priestley in enamel, mostly red and blue, with a gold rim and twelve spokes cast in non-tarnishable metal. It is a strange piece of ceremony for an organization whose stated goal is simply "advancing the chemical sciences." That phrase raises more questions than it answers. What kind of body needs its own regalia, its own coat of arms, its own annual medals? And what does it actually do, day to day, for the chemists who carry its letters after their names?
In 1980, four separate bodies folded into one: the Chemical Society, the Royal Institute of Chemistry, the Faraday Society, and the Society for Analytical Chemistry. The result was the Royal Society of Chemistry, chartered anew and built to serve as both a learned society and a professional body. At its founding, the merged organization counted 49,000 members across the world.
Burlington House on Piccadilly in London serves as its headquarters today. Cambridge houses a second base, Thomas Graham House, named for the first president of the old Chemical Society and now home to RSC Publishing. Outside the UK, the society keeps offices at the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University, inside Philadelphia's University City Science Center. It also has bases in Beijing, Shanghai, and Bangalore.
Leadership rotates every two years; the society's current president, Annette Doherty, holds the post from 2024 to 2026. That role carries real authority, including power over the professional credentials that shape chemists' careers across Britain.
Candidates for Chartered Chemist status, CChem, must already hold MRSC or FRSC membership before they can apply. They also need to show specific professional skills and hold a job that actually requires chemical expertise. Through the Science Council, the society also grants further titles to qualified candidates. These include Chartered Scientist, CSci, Registered Scientist, RSci, and Registered Science Technician, RScTech.
FRSC, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, marks a major contribution to chemistry or a related field such as biological chemistry. Before 2006, the society published the names of that year's new Fellows in The Times of London. Honorary Fellowship, HonFRSC, instead recognizes distinguished service to the field of chemistry itself.
Membership itself starts lower down: Affiliate Membership carries no post-nominal and suits students or others not yet meeting higher requirements. AMRSC goes to graduates in the chemical sciences and serves as the entry point for formal membership. MRSC requires at least three years of professional experience gained beyond the degree itself. In 1904, eighteen women chemists petitioned the society to be admitted as Fellows.
EurChem, the European Chemist designation, is available to Chartered Chemists through the society's role in the European Communities Chemistry Council. A separate qualification, MChemA, functions as the UK's statutory credential for practicing as a Public Analyst. Earning it requires a portfolio of relevant experience, theory papers, and a one-day laboratory practical exam. Between 1981 and 1995, the society also awarded GRSC, the Graduate of the Royal Society of Chemistry, for courses equivalent to an honours chemistry degree.
That ladder of credentials sits inside a larger structure of specialist divisions and local sections that organize the society's daily work.
Nine divisions organize the society's work by subject area, backed by thirty-five local sections across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Each division also runs its own subject groups for narrower specialties within its field.
The Analytical Division carries on the founding aims of the old Society for Analytical Chemistry across twelve subject groups. The Dalton Division, named for John Dalton, covers inorganic chemistry through six subject groups. The Faraday Division, honoring Michael Faraday and the aims of the former Faraday Society, spans physical chemistry. It runs fourteen subject groups, more than any other division.
The Education Division covers chemical teaching through four subject groups, while the Organic Division covers organic chemistry through six. Two more focus on Chemical Biology Interface work and on Environment, Sustainability and Energy, running two and three subject groups respectively. Materials Chemistry runs four subject groups, and Industry and Technology runs thirteen, the second-largest total in the society.
All of that specialist activity eventually reaches the public through one channel: the society's publishing arm.
RSC Gold is the name the society gives to its all-in journal subscription bundle, sold alongside individual titles. As a not-for-profit publisher, it puts any surplus from that business back into its research and outreach work. Its flagship titles are Chemical Communications, Chemical Science, and Chemical Society Reviews.
Chemistry World, a general chemistry magazine mailed monthly to every member worldwide, first appeared in January 2004. It replaced Chemistry in Britain, which had run since 1965, and carries the ISSN 1473-7604. Its pages mix news, features on chemical history and technology, book reviews, and letters from readers.
For teachers, the society publishes Education in Chemistry, plus a free online title, Chemistry Education Research and Practice. Its book list includes the 23-volume Tutorial Chemistry Texts series, edited by E. W. Abel, and the eight-book Molecular World series, coordinated by L. E. Smart. It has also published books on chemical history, including a history of the Faraday Society.
Online, ChemSpider offers a free database of chemicals and their properties. The Interactive Lab Primer teaches basic lab safety alongside common techniques and apparatus. A separate scheme, Landmarks of Chemistry, places blue plaques at sites tied to notable chemical events or people.
At Burlington House itself, free public lectures cover chemistry topics as varied as curry and the science of music. Speakers have included science writers Philip Ball, Antony John Williams, and John Emsley.
Those talks happen inside a library whose own story stretches back further than the society itself.
The Royal Society of Chemistry, then known as the Chemical Society, moved into Burlington House on Piccadilly in 1857. At the center of that building sits its Library and Information Centre, a collection that itself dates back to 1842.
Notable fellows, including Michael Faraday, have donated material to the library over the years. During both World Wars, that collection became a hub for chemical reference information as researchers leaned on it heavily.
The society also carries its own coat of arms, in a full version flanked by a lion and a unicorn. Its Latin motto, Pro scientia et humanitate, translates to for the sake of knowledge and for the benefit of mankind. A smaller version of the arms echoes the design once used by the Royal Institute of Chemistry.
That same instinct toward looking after its own runs through a fund the society has long kept for its members.
The Chemists' Community Fund is the working name for the Royal Society of Chemistry's Benevolent Fund. It began in 1920, when the Institute of Chemistry founded it as a First World War memorial. That institute later became the Royal Institute of Chemistry. Its stated aim was to help needy Fellows or Associates of the Institute, along with their families and the dependents of those who had died.
The fund's ethos, summed up as members helping members, actually predates its own founding. The Institute of Chemistry's Council had already been raising money from members for members in need before the fund formally existed.
In 1960, the fund introduced a system of volunteer visitors who called on applicants, beneficiaries, and elderly or housebound members nearby. Every local section gained its own fund representative as part of that system. A major review between 2003 and 2004 modernized the fund and produced a new strategy document, one still updated every three years. Another review followed in 2014, aiming to widen the fund's reach toward preventing poverty and offering broader support beyond money alone. The Benevolent Fund Grants Committee, made up of volunteer society members, oversees the fund today and meets every three months.
Money and mutual aid make up only one form of recognition the society hands out; it names chemists in a very different way too.
The Harrison-Meldola Memorial Prizes reward British chemists under the age of 32 for promising original research. The award took its combined name in 2008, when the older Meldola Medal and Prize merged with the Edward Harrison prize. Early winners under the Meldola name included Christopher Kelk Ingold, honored in both 1921 and 1922, and Cyril Norman Hinshelwood in 1923. Later recipients included R. H. Stokes in 1946, D. H. Williams in 1966, and J. Evans in 1978.
The Corday-Morgan medals cover three separate awards each year for the most meritorious contributions to experimental chemistry, including computer simulation. Past recipients include Derek Barton in 1949, Ronald Sydney Nyholm in 1950, and Frederick Sanger in 1951. Later winners included John Cornforth in 1953, Rex Richards in 1954, and George Porter in 1955.
The Tilden Prize, once called the Tilden Lecture, gives three annual awards to scientists in mid-career for advances in chemistry.
The Faraday Division separately awards the Marlow Award each year to a division member under 32 for contributions to physical chemistry or chemical physics. Recent recipients have included Andrew Orr-Ewing in 1999, Jonathan A. Jones in 2000, Helen Fielding in 2001, and Jonathan Essex in 2002. The list continues with Daren Caruana in 2003, Jonathan Reid in 2004, Julie Macpherson in 2005, Fred Manby in 2006, and Alessandro Troisi in 2007.
Once a year, the society also runs a conference held entirely on Twitter across 24 hours, with no physical venue at all. By stripping away travel costs and a fixed location, the format lets a chemist anywhere in the world take part for that single day.
