  On the 8th of April 1341, inside a medieval senatorial palace on Rome's Campidoglio, Francesco Petrarca was crowned poet laureate in laurel. The same title would go on to name court poets in Persia, China, and England. Centuries later, it named elected literary voices in American statehouses and small community boards. What Greek myth turned a simple wreath of leaves into a mark of literary honor? And what does that myth have to do with the stipend the Library of Congress pays today?

• 2. The Laurel's Origin

  In ancient Greece, the laurel formed a crown of honor for poets and heroes. The custom traces to the myth of Apollo and Daphne, whose name means laurel in Greek. Padua revived that practice in 1315 by crowning the poet Albertino Mussato with the same wreath. Renaissance revivalists lacked detailed knowledge of the Roman precedent they meant to emulate, so their ceremonies took on the character of doctoral candidatures. In Persia, the poet laureate, styled amir- or malek-al-šoʿarāʾ, held recognized artistic authority and a guaranteed source of income. European universities also awarded poet laureate as a royal degree in rhetoric during the Middle Ages, recognizing skill in rhetoric, grammar, and language. As the office spread, the term laureate itself came to signal top honor in other fields entirely, as in a Nobel laureate today.

• 3. England's Royal Poets

  Long before any title existed, Richard Cœur-de-Lion kept a versificator regis, a king's poet, named Gulielmus Peregrinus, or William the Pilgrim. Henry III likewise retained a court versifier known simply as Master Henry. According to Notes and Queries in 1876, Henry I had paid a versificator regis 10 shillings a year. In the fifteenth century, a versifier named John Kay called himself Edward IV's humble poet laureate. Geoffrey Chaucer, who lived from 1340 to 1400, was called Poet Laureate and granted an annual allowance of wine in 1389. John Skelton studied at Oxford in the early 1480s and was advanced to the degree of poet laureate in 1488. He then joined the court of King Henry VII to tutor the future Henry VIII. The University of Louvain conferred the same title on him in 1492, followed by Cambridge in 1492-93. In his 1490 preface to The Boke of Eneydos, the printer William Caxton wrote: "But I pray mayster John Skelton, late created poete laureate in the unyversite of Oxenforde, to oversee and correct this sayd booke." King James I created a pension for Ben Jonson in 1617, and Jonson was later succeeded by William Davenant. After Davenant's death, the royal office passed to John Dryden by letters patent in 1668, and the post became a regular institution. The role also functioned as a court poet celebrating state occasions until that duty was abolished in the early 1800s. As of 2026, the office continues under Simon Armitage, one of many national roles that other countries would develop through very different paths.

• 4. America's Public Poets

  From 1937 to 1984, the Library of Congress ran the position under the name Consultant in Poetry. An Act of Congress renamed it Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1985. Poets laureate of the United States receive a $35,000 stipend and oversee an ongoing series of poetry readings and lectures at the library. No other duties are required, and laureates are not obligated to compose poems for government events or officials. After the September 11 terrorist attacks, then poet laureate Billy Collins was asked to write a poem for a special joint session of Congress. He wrote "The Names," reading it on the 6th of September 2002 in a performance still available in streaming audio and video. The stipend's original purpose was to give poets a full income so they could write full time, but the amount was never adjusted for inflation. It now functions as a moderate bonus supplementing a poet's existing income rather than replacing it. Poets laureate of the United States have included Ada Limón, Joy Harjo, Tracy K. Smith, and Juan Felipe Herrera. Amanda Gorman became the country's first National Youth Poet Laureate, appointed in 2017. New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania have no such state position, while South Dakota's and South Carolina's posts currently sit vacant. Those empty state seats sit alongside a much older, and far more crowded, roster of court poets kept by monarchies on every continent.

• 5. Court Poets Across Continents

  In ancient Scandinavia, the skald spent a career serving as court poet to Norway's kings. Ministers in China's feudal era presented what were called commanded poems at royal events, bound to serve the ruling class. Japan's imperially appointed poet laureate, the keikanshijin, was regularly called upon to read at the annual Utakai Hajime. In the Kuba kingdom of the Belgian Congo, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, appointed bards served as both royal historian and poet laureate. These bards were also known as praise-poets for their role in venerating the chief. In the Xhosa language, the term Imbongi YeSizwe can mean either poet laureate or national poet. Some figures carry both labels depending on the source. They include Agostinho Neto of Angola, Kazi Nazrul Islam of Bangladesh, and Rabindranath Tagore of India. The same dual status extends to José Craveirinha of Mozambique, Mahmoud Darwish of Palestine, and Mohamed Ibrahim Warsame Hadrawi of Somalia. Edwin Thumboo of Singapore and Taras Shevchenko of Ukraine round out the list. Others hold only an unofficial poet laureate status for their poetic work. Those figures include Shamsur Rahman of Bangladesh, Thomas Moore of Bermuda, and Leung Ping-kwan of Hong Kong. Francisco Borja da Costa of Timor-Leste and Haji Gora Haji of Zanzibar hold the same unofficial standing. This same office also grows at ground level, where community groups and modern foundations name their own laureates entirely apart from any government.

• 6. Community and Modern Titles

  The Poetry Foundation now designates a Young People's Poet Laureate, kept separate from the National Youth Poet Laureate and the United States Poet Laureate. The Pikes Peak Poet Laureate is chosen by a Presenting Partners group drawn from within its own community. Minnesota's poet laureate is selected by the League of Minnesota Poets, an organization established in 1934. The Northampton Poet Laureate answers to the Northampton Arts Council rather than to any state government. More than a dozen national governments still keep the poet laureate tradition running today. The Commonwealth of Nations created its own version of the post, and Selina Tusitala Marsh became its inaugural Commonwealth Poet Laureate in 2025. Marsh's 2025 appointment gives the Commonwealth its own shared laureate for the first time. Future poets across its member states may next compete to fill that same post.
