Oceán
Oceán formed in August 1985, the work of a group of friends who had met in high school and already played together in various underground bands. They took their cues from across the Iron Curtain, from the British duo Erasure and from Depeche Mode, and built a sound out of synthesizers rather than guitars. For a Czech synth-pop band in that era, the distance between admiration and contact with those idols was vast. So how did a group rehearsing in high school friendships end up sharing a stage with the very band that inspired them? And why, after breaking up in 1993, did Oceán wait nearly two decades before returning?
Michaela Klimková sang lead in the earliest version of Oceán, while Petr Muk played bass and Zdeněk Pavelec handled guitar. The lineup did not hold. Klimková would later marry Muk, but the band's musical identity shifted first. When the keyboardist Dušan Vozáry, brother of drummer Jan Vozáry, joined in 1987, Oceán briefly swelled to a five-piece. That arrangement did not last either. Pavelec left soon after, and with his departure the guitar disappeared from the band's sound entirely. What remained leaned hard into synthesizers, completing the turn toward the electronic textures the group is known for. Working alongside them through all of this was Petr Hons, who wrote most of the band's lyrics without ever being an official member. His words shaped songs he had no formal credit for, a quiet authorship that would only be recognized much later.
In 1988, Oceán released its first single, "Ráchel / Dávná zem," on Supraphon Records. A second single, "Lék světu / Jeden den," followed in 1989, the same year Erasure brought their European tour through Prague. The proximity of idol and admirer was about to collapse. From December 1989 into January 1990, Oceán supported Erasure on their UK and Ireland tour. For a Czech band, the trip was a real success, carrying them out of their home circuit and onto stages abroad. The momentum carried straight into a studio. In March 1990, the band recorded its debut album Dávná zem, or Ancient land, at the Opus Records studio in Bratislava, where the live energy of the tour found a permanent form.
Dávná zem was a commercial success, and Oceán moved quickly to follow it. The next year brought Pyramida snů, or Pyramid of dreams, and with it a steep rise in the band's popularity. In July 1991, they performed at the Wallenstein Palace, and Czechoslovak Television recorded the performance. The band's reach extended beyond the studio and the concert hall. They traveled to Greece to record several music videos, pairing their synth-pop with Mediterranean settings. At the start of 1992, the maxi single "Haifa" appeared, gathering four remixes of songs from Pyramida snů. That same year, the compilation 2 1/2 collected unreleased demos and other tracks. Also in 1992, Petr Muk, Petr Kučera, and the lyricist Petr Hons launched a new project called Shalom, a venture that would outlast the band that gave rise to it.
Oceán broke up in 1993, and Shalom carried on past the end. The band stayed quiet for years. In 2011, Oceán reunited, but it returned without one of its defining voices. The late Petr Muk could not take his place at the microphone, and the singer Jitka Charvátová stepped in. The reformed lineup also brought Petr Hons in from the margins. The lyricist who had been unofficially part of the band for years finally became a full member, now playing guitar and bass. Petr Kučera returned on keyboards and Jan Vozáry on drums, anchoring the new group to the old one. At the end of 2014, Dušan Vozáry left. From there the reunited band kept recording, releasing Ve smíru in 2016 and Femme Fatale in 2018, proof that a band built in high school could still find new ground three decades on.
