  • Nicolás Otamendi was born on the 12th of February 1988 in Buenos Aires, and by the time he lifted the FIFA World Cup in December 2022, he had done something almost no outfield player in the history of the tournament could claim: he had played every single minute of Argentina's entire campaign. Not a substitution made for him. Not a single second missed. In his 100th international cap, in the final against France, he gave away the penalty that opened France's scoring. Argentina still won, on penalties, after one of the most dramatic finals ever played. How does a player carry that kind of pressure, across an entire career, and end up on the winning side of history? That question runs through everything in Otamendi's story: the position changes, the loan spells, the near-misses with Argentina, the years at the very top of English football, and the quiet authority that made him captain of Benfica at one of the oldest clubs in European football.

  • Otamendi made his Primera División debut on the 10th of May 2008, in a 2-1 home win for Vélez Sarsfield against Rosario Central. He was fifth in the queue for the centre-back position at the time, behind four named seniors. The turnaround came under manager Ricardo Gareca in the 2009 Clausura, when a competitor picked up an international injury and Otamendi stepped in. He played 17 of the 19 league matches in a title-winning campaign. His first professional goal arrived in the 2009 Apertura, in a 3-1 win over Arsenal de Sarandí. By the end of that year he had been chosen for the South American Team of the Year, in a continent-wide journalists' poll run by the newspaper El País. On the 23rd of August 2010, Porto paid €4 million for his transfer. Vélez held on to half of his registration rights, with a further €4 million release clause set for Porto to exercise before September 2011. The club did exactly that, on the 6th of September 2011, securing him outright.

  • Otamendi scored in his very first match for Porto, a 2-0 home win over Olhanense. That debut season brought 15 appearances and five goals, including both goals in a 2-0 away win at Braga, as Porto claimed the Primeira Liga title. He also won the UEFA Europa League that same 2010-11 season, part of a haul that would eventually total eight major titles at the Portuguese club across three Primeira Liga championships, a Taça de Portugal, three Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira titles, and the Europa League. On the 5th of February 2014, Valencia paid €12 million to bring him to La Liga on a five-year deal. He was immediately loaned to Atlético Mineiro in Belo Horizonte, where he scored once in 19 appearances, including the opener in a 4-1 win over city rivals América Mineiro on the 23rd of March in the state championship semi-finals.

  • Otamendi's debut in Spanish football came on the 23rd of August 2014, in a 1-1 away draw against Sevilla. His first goal for Valencia followed on the 4th of October, in a 3-1 home win over Atlético Madrid. The moment that defined his time in Spain came on the 4th of January 2015, when he headed the winner in a 2-1 home victory over Real Madrid, ending their club-record 22-match winning streak. He finished the season as the first centre-back to score six goals in a single La Liga campaign, and was the only Valencia player named in the La Liga Team of the Year. Despite that recognition, his relationship with the club deteriorated the following summer. Late in pre-season he refused to train or play, unwilling to risk his chances of a bigger move. Manchester City paid £32 million on the 20th of August 2015 to bring him to England.

  • His Manchester City debut came on the 15th of September 2015, as a substitute for Vincent Kompany in a Champions League group game against Juventus. His Premier League debut followed four days later, at the City of Manchester Stadium against West Ham United. On the 10th of December 2017, Otamendi scored the winning goal at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby, pushing City's lead at the top of the Premier League to 11 points. City won the title that season with 100 points, a record for the English top flight. On the 18th of April 2018, he was named in the PFA Team of the Year alongside Kyle Walker, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Agüero. The following season he was part of the first English side to win the domestic men's treble: the League Cup, the Premier League, and the FA Cup. By the time he left in 2020 he had accumulated four League Cups and an FA Cup alongside the two Premier League titles. His final trophy with City was the League Cup in March 2020, retained for the third consecutive season.

  • On the 29th of September 2020, Otamendi moved to Benfica for €15 million. Rúben Dias made the opposite journey to Manchester City as part of the same deal. Otamendi made his Benfica league debut on the 4th of October in a 3-2 win against Farense. He was named captain and led the club to the 2022-23 Primeira Liga title. On the 4th of January 2025, he made his 200th appearance for the club in a 2-1 defeat to Braga. On the 28th of January 2026, at the age of 37, he reached his 100th Champions League appearance in a 4-2 win over Real Madrid. He announced his departure from Benfica at the end of the 2025-26 season, and on the 29th of May 2026 he signed a one-year contract with River Plate in Argentina, where he will formally join in July 2026.

  • Diego Maradona called Otamendi into the Argentina squad in April 2009, when he had played only 11 professional matches. He started the friendly against Panama on the 20th of May in a 3-1 win. At the 2010 World Cup, Maradona used him at right back as well as centre-back. After the 0-4 quarter-final defeat to Germany, the position switch drew criticism. Otamendi later said publicly that he was willing to play wherever his national team needed him. He was cut from the 2014 World Cup squad. In the 2015 Copa América he played the entirety of all but one match as Argentina lost 1-4 to hosts Chile on penalties in the final. He was named in the Team of the Tournament. The same outcome followed in the Copa América Centenario in 2016: a final against Chile, a penalty shootout defeat, 2-4. Three lost finals. On the 10th of July 2021, on his fourth Copa América attempt, Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the final. Otamendi played the full match. The following year, on the 18th of December 2022, he played every minute of the World Cup final at the 100th cap milestone. He scored the decisive penalty against Ecuador in the 2024 Copa América quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw, winning 4-2 in the shootout, and collected a second consecutive Copa América title. On the 28th of May 2026, he was selected in Argentina's 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
