  Nashville SC officially formed in 2016 when USL awarded a franchise to the founding ownership group. Nashville FC sold its name, logo, and colors to the new USL team in exchange for one percent equity and a board seat. Bill Hagerty led a group of business leaders who created the Nashville MLS Organizing Committee in August 2016. They began securing funding for an MLS stadium shortly after. Gary Smith became the first manager in April 2017 following his 2010 MLS Cup victory. John Ingram purchased a majority stake in DMD Soccer through Nashville Holdings LLC on the 4th of March 2017. His partnership aimed to present a united front during the MLS expansion process. The city made it onto the list of ten finalist cities for four new franchises. MLS officially awarded an expansion team to Nashville on the 20th of December 2017. The league announced that Nashville would join in 2020.   Plans for a $275 million stadium and redevelopment project were unveiled in October 2017. City approval came in November of that same year. The council voted 31-yes and 8-no on the 4th of September 2018 regarding construction at the Fairgrounds site. A proposal to submit the plan to a referendum was rejected by votes of 25-yes and 12-no. John Rose led a nonprofit organization representing the Tennessee State Fair in January 2019. He sued to halt construction citing inadequate space for fair functions. The lawsuit was dismissed in February 2019 after city officials refused meetings while litigation remained pending. Demolition began in March 2020 on the Fairgrounds site. An agreement amendment dated the 13th of February 2020 shifted funding responsibilities entirely to private sources with help from Mayor John Cooper. The team agreed to fund $19 million in infrastructure improvements surrounding Geodis Park. The final structure holds 30,000 seats and stands as the largest soccer-specific stadium in the United States.
