Murder of John Lennon
Mark David Chapman, a 25-year-old former security guard from Honolulu, Hawaii, stood before the Dakota on the 8th of December 1980. He had no prior criminal convictions and was known as a fan of the Beatles. His obsession with J.D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye shaped his worldview. Chapman wished to model his life after Holden Caulfield, the protagonist who loathed hypocrisy. He became enraged by Lennon's 1966 remark that the band was more popular than Jesus. He also resented lyrics from songs like God where Lennon stated he did not believe in Jesus. Chapman viewed Lennon's lavish lifestyle as proof of phoniness despite claims of peace and love. Anthony Fawcett's 1976 book John Lennon: One Day at a Time highlighted this contradiction. Chapman concluded that Lennon was a phony who deserved punishment.
Chapman waited outside the Dakota building early on the morning of the 8th of December 1980. He spent most of the day near the entrance talking to fans and the doorman. Later that afternoon, photographer Annie Leibovitz arrived for a Rolling Stone magazine shoot. She captured images of Lennon and Yoko Ono naked together. The photo session ended at 3:30 p.m. Lennon gave his last interview around 5:00 p.m. to disc jockey Dave Sholin. At 10:50 p.m., the couple returned home in a limousine. They exited on 72nd Street instead of driving into the secure courtyard. Chapman nodded at Ono as she passed. When Lennon walked by, he glanced briefly at the man waiting there. Seconds later, Chapman drew a .38 Special revolver from his coat pocket. He fired five hollow-point bullets at close range. Four shots struck Lennon in the back. One bullet missed and hit a window. Lennon staggered up five steps to the lobby crying I am shot before falling to the floor.
Moran carried Lennon on his back to Roosevelt Hospital minutes before 11:00 p.m. Doctors found him not breathing with no pulse. Three doctors and two nurses worked for 10 to 20 minutes trying to resuscitate him. As a last resort they cut open his chest attempting a thoracotomy. The damage to blood vessels above and around the heart was too great. One bullet lodged itself in the aorta beside the heart while others passed through his body. Reports about who operated on Lennon remain inconsistent. Stephan Lynn claimed he massaged the heart for 20 minutes. Richard Marks stated he performed surgery and administered a massive blood transfusion. David Halleran disputed both accounts saying the other doctors did nothing initially. Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:15 p.m. according to his death certificate. The cause of death listed hypovolemic shock due to loss of more than 80% of blood volume. Witnesses noted that the Beatles song All My Loving played over the hospital sound system as he died.
Yoko Ono asked the hospital not to report her husband's death until she informed their son Sean. News producer Alan J. Weiss waited in the emergency room after being injured in a motorcycle crash earlier that evening. Police officers wheeled Lennon into the same room where Weiss sat. Weiss called his station and relayed the information. Roone Arledge president of ABC News then contacted Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell. They decided to break the news during Monday Night Football. The first official confirmation came from Steve North at Long Island radio station WLIR. New York rock station WNEW immediately suspended all programming. Stations throughout the country switched to special broadcasts devoted to Lennon or Beatles music. Millions paused for 10 minutes of silence around the world on December 14. Over 225,000 people gathered at the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park. At least three fans committed suicide prompting Ono to ask mourners not to despair. An open letter titled In Gratitude appeared in The New York Times thanking those who mourned.
Chapman was taken to the NYPD's 20th Precinct on West 82nd Street for questioning. He spent eight hours there before appearing in court. A judge remanded him to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Chapman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder despite advice from lawyers to claim insanity. He stated his plea was the will of God. Under the terms of his plea he received a sentence of 20 years to life imprisonment. Parole eligibility began in 2000. As of September 2025 Chapman has been denied parole 14 times. He remains incarcerated at Green Haven Correctional Facility. Before sentencing Chapman read a passage from The Catcher in the Rye to the court. Three months after the murder John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate Ronald Reagan. Police found a copy of Salinger's novel among Hinckley's possessions. Hinckley expressed sadness over Lennon's death and wished to make some kind of statement.
Leibovitz's photo of naked Lennon embracing Ono appeared on the 22nd of January 1981 issue of Rolling Stone. The American Society of Magazine Editors ranked it as the top magazine cover of the last forty years in 2005. In 1985 New York City dedicated an area of Central Park across from the Dakota as Strawberry Fields. Countries donated trees while Naples Italy provided the Imagine mosaic centerpiece. Yoko Ono placed a lit candle in the window of Lennon's room every year on December 8. Fans gather at the nearby memorial for an all-day vigil with musicians playing songs. The Imagine Peace Tower stands on Viðey Island near Reykjavík Iceland. It projects a vertical beam of light into the sky between October 9 and December 8 annually. Bob Dylan recorded Roll On John on his 2012 album Tempest referencing the assassination. George Harrison released All Those Years Ago in spring 1981 with McCartney and Starr credited as additional musicians. Queen performed Imagine the night after the murder at Wembley Arena. Freddie Mercury wrote Life Is Real Song for Lennon appearing on Hot Space in 1982.
