  • Michael J. Bassett grew up in Newport, Shropshire, within the West Midlands region of England. She described this upbringing as a safe and unremarkable childhood during her early years at Adams Grammar School. Her initial passion was not cinema but rather wildlife and nature itself. Young Bassett dreamed of becoming a wildlife veterinarian who would work in Africa. This specific career goal defined her teenage ambitions before any film industry connection existed. School grades eventually made that veterinary path impossible for her to pursue further. At age 16 she left formal education behind to begin working as an assistant for a wildlife filmmaker. That role lasted eighteen months while she learned photography and basic filmmaking techniques.

  • Bassett returned to school later to complete A-Levels with hopes of earning a Zoology degree. She wrote letters to various television producers seeking employment as a nature presenter. Janet Street-Porter contacted her shortly after those inquiries were sent out. Bassett began presenting science and nature segments on the children's program Get Fresh. Work opportunities dried up over time causing her interest to fade significantly. She realized then that making films was what she truly wanted to do instead. Moving into feature filmmaking required substantial financial risk so she took another job first. For one year she animated and voiced the puppet character Scally the Dog on Children's ITV. During this period she considered whether a full career change was possible or wise. She produced several short films alongside creating a sixteen-millimeter piece for broadcast television. All the while she worked on feature scripts hoping to attract producer attention. Her screenplay titled No Man's Land generated significant interest from many studios offering purchases. Bassett remained determined to direct the film herself rather than selling it away. One production company eventually consented to let her direct the project. The film was retitled Deathwatch upon its completion in 2002.

  • Deathwatch earned the Grand Prize of European Fantasy Film in Silver during its release. It received nominations including an International Fantasy Film Award for Best Film. The movie also garnered a nomination for the Grand Prize of European Fantasy Film in Gold. Additional recognition came from the Molodist Festival Award for Best Feature Fiction Film. Neuchâtel Narcisse Award and Sitges Maria Award both nominated the film as well. Bassett followed Deathwatch with Wilderness which arrived in theaters in 2006. Her next major project became Solomon Kane released in 2009 as a dark fantasy adaptation. That film won the Fantasporto Audience Jury Award among other accolades. Silent Hill: Revelation appeared in 2012 receiving a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award nomination. These early horror and fantasy projects established her reputation within genre filmmaking circles. Red Sonja is scheduled for release in 2025 after Hannah John-Kamen and Joey Soloway departed the production. Bassett did rewrite the script based on the original work by Tasha Huo before filming began.

  • Silent Hill: Revelation marked Bassett's first direct adaptation of a video game franchise into cinema. Since 2012 she has worked extensively as a director writer and producer on television series. Strike Back ran for fifteen episodes between 2012 and 2018 under her direction. Ash vs Evil Dead featured four episodes directed by Bassett during its run from 2015 to 2016. Power also included four episodes directed by her over the period spanning 2015 to 2018. Altered Carbon received two episodes directed by Bassett in 2019 alone. Additional television credits include Da Vinci's Demons with two episodes in 2013. The Player had two episodes directed by her in 2015 while Nightflyers featured one episode titled Greywing. Taken included an episode called Imperium and Iron Fist had Target: Iron Fist directed by Bassett. Motherland: Fort Salem received Bellweather Season directed by her in 2020. Reacher featured Pie directed by Bassett in 2022 alongside Consolidation from The Terminal List that same year. Quantum Leap included The Lonely Hearts Club episode in 2023. The Equalizer had The Whistleblower directed by Bassett in 2024. FUBA is set for release in 2025 with Dam It as an episode title.

  • In 2017 Bassett came out publicly as trans after years of working within the film industry. She has two daughters and a son who make up her immediate family unit. Her daughter Isabel co-wrote screenplays including Rogue and Endangered Species with Bassett herself. These collaborative writing efforts highlight their shared creative partnership beyond just familial ties. Bassett's transition into public life occurred alongside continued professional output across multiple genres. Her personal identity became part of her public narrative without overshadowing her directorial achievements. The combination of raising three children while maintaining a demanding career schedule defines much of her current life. This balance between private family matters and public filmmaking work continues to shape her perspective today.
