Kristen Kish
Kristen Louise Kish, born the 1st of December 1983, never set out to be on television. When the idea first reached her, she had no interest in it at all. Today she hosts one of the best-known cooking competitions in America, the same show she entered with little enthusiasm. She is an American chef whose story begins in South Korea and passes through Michigan, Chicago and Boston before it reaches a studio kitchen. How did a reluctant contestant become the person who now presides over the competition? And what did she build in restaurants and on the page, before and after the cameras found her?
Kristen Kish was born in Seoul, South Korea, and at four months old she was adopted by a family in Kentwood, Michigan. In Michigan she attended East Kentwood High School, where she worked as a model while still a student. She graduated in 2002.
A year at Grand Valley State University came next, where she studied international business and economics. That path ended after a single year. She moved on to Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago, where she earned an AA in Culinary Arts.
Looking back over her cooking, people describe her style as contemporary French cuisine with an Italian influence.
In 2005, Kish graduated from Le Cordon Bleu and spent the next two years working in Chicago. Then she moved to Boston, where she took a job as a line cook at the Top of the Hub restaurant.
Guy Martin ran a Boston restaurant called Sensing, and Kish worked there as chef de partie, a post responsible for one section of the kitchen. In 2011 she became sous-chef at Stir, a culinary demonstration kitchen.
Stir belonged to Barbara Lynch, and in 2012 Lynch promoted Kish to chef de cuisine. That same year, Lynch pressed her to do something Kish had never wanted to do.
In 2012, Kish competed in the tenth season of Bravo's Top Chef, filmed in Seattle, Washington. She had shown no interest in appearing on television, and she agreed only because Barbara Lynch insisted.
First she had to earn a place. In the qualifying rounds, she was asked to create a signature soup for judge Emeril Lagasse. She passed that test and moved into the competition proper.
Four Elimination Challenges went to her. Then came the Restaurant Wars challenge in Episode 11, and she was eliminated. Her season did not end there. In Last Chance Kitchen she won five consecutive victories and fought her way back into the main competition.
Brooke Williamson was waiting in the finale. Kish defeated her and was crowned the Top Chef. The win made her only the second woman to hold the title in the series.
After the show, Kish worked as chef de cuisine at Lynch's restaurant Menton, a post she held until 2014.
In 2017, she released her first cookbook, Kristen Kish Cooking: Recipes and Techniques, co-authored with Meredith Erickson. The following year, 2018, she became chef and partner at her own restaurant, Arlo Grey, in Austin, Texas.
Since 2024, Kish has served as Chef-in-Residence at the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. The teaching role is recent, and it sits alongside a television career that by then had been running for more than a decade.
In 2015, Kish co-hosted 36 Hours, a six-episode series on the Travel Channel, alongside Kyle Martino, a television soccer analyst and former professional soccer player. The show adapted a New York Times travel column of the same name. Each episode followed the pair as they spent 36 hours eating, drinking and exploring a city.
From 2021 to 2022, Kish starred in Fast Foodies on TruTV, with fellow Top Chef alumni Jeremy Ford and Justin Sutherland. A celebrity named a favorite fast food item in each episode. In round one, the chefs copied the dish as precisely as possible. In round two, they reimagined it as haute cuisine.
In 2022, Kish co-presented Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend, the Netflix revival of the Iron Chef franchise, with Alton Brown and Mark Dacascos. She gave running commentary with Brown and often worked as the floor reporter. That meant walking down to the kitchen to check on the chefs' progress.
In 2023, she hosted Restaurants at the End of the World for National Geographic. She visited restaurants in remote locations and showcased local chefs, farmers, fishers, herders and foragers.
She also appeared as a guest judge on shows including Chopped Junior in 2016 and Chopped in 2020.
In 2023, Kish was named the next host of Top Chef, after Padma Lakshmi decided to step away from the franchise. Her credits as host include Top Chef: Wisconsin in 2024, Top Chef: Destination Canada in 2025 and Top Chef: Carolinas in 2026.
From 2024 into 2025, she also hosted a web series called Top Chef: The Dish with Kish. Her work in the role has earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program.
In 2026, the host became a player. Kish appeared as a contestant on the fourth season of The Traitors, where she was designated a Faithful. The Traitors "murdered" her in the tenth episode, and she placed eighth overall.
In 2014, Kish publicly came out. She did so while announcing, over Instagram, the first anniversary of her relationship with her girlfriend at the time, Jacqueline Westbrook.
In 2019, she announced her engagement to Bianca Dusic in an Instagram post. The two married in 2021.
In 2025, Kish's memoir, Accidentally on Purpose, was published and became a New York Times Best Seller.
