  • Jon Bernthal was studying acting in Russia when he also won a place as a catcher for a Russian professional baseball team. Few American actors can say the same. That pairing of stage training and a ballfield, far from home, sets the tone for an unusual career. Bernthal is now one of the most recognizable character actors working in film and television. The path there was not direct. What did he do in the years between his training and his recognition? Why does he keep choosing roles that ask him to go quiet or stay in character? And what does he do with success once it arrives? The answers begin in Washington, D.C.

  • Jonathan Edward Bernthal was born in Washington, D.C., on the 20th of September 1976, into a Jewish family. His mother is Joan Lurie, born Marx. His father, Eric Lawrence, known as Rick, is a former lawyer at Latham & Watkins LLP. Rick also chaired the board of directors of The Humane Society of the United States until 2019. A paternal grandfather, Murray Bernthal, worked as a musician and producer.

Two brothers grew up alongside him. Nicholas became an orthopedic surgeon and a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. Thomas runs a consulting agency and is married to Sheryl Sandberg, the former Facebook COO. The three brothers are cousins of the rock musician Adam Schlesinger, who died in 2020.

Cabin John, Maryland, was the family's home, and Bernthal graduated from the Sidwell Friends School in 1995. He has often described his younger self as a "troublemaker." College did not hold him either. He studied at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, and then dropped out. On the advice of his acting teacher, Alma Becker, he joined the Moscow Art Theatre School. That decision would soon put him in front of someone from one of America's best-known university theater programs.

  • At Harvard University, the executive director of the Institute for Advanced Theater Training noticed Bernthal while he was still in Moscow. The institute is based at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bernthal studied there as a graduate-level certificate student and completed his studies in 2002. He then moved to New York City to pursue theater. He is a method actor, and since 2002 he has performed in over thirty plays, regionally and off-Broadway. Many of those were with his own company, Fovea Floods, which is now defunct.

In August 2014, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival hosted The Time of Our Lies, a play about the life and times of Howard Zinn. Bernthal executive produced it alongside the actor Viggo Mortensen. The director was Josh Chambers, whom the source describes as a frequent theater collaborator of Bernthal's.

The play that did the most for his stage reputation was Small Engine Repair, a dark comedy that premiered in 2011. Bernthal originated the role of Terrance Swaino. Critics praised his "energy and wit," and he was nominated for an Ovation Award. MCC Theater then moved the production Off-Broadway, and Bernthal signed on to repeat the role. Filming commitments forced him to withdraw, and James Badge Dale took his place. Bernthal got the part back on film. He reprised it in early 2019, and the film version reached audiences in September 2021.

  • Boston Legal, CSI: Miami and How I Met Your Mother were among the series where Bernthal took small guest roles while building his career in New York. He was also cast in the 2004 movie of Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding. In 2006 he relocated to Los Angeles. His first regular television role came on the CBS sitcom The Class, which was canceled after one season. Film work followed, including Day Zero and World Trade Center.

Eastwick, an ABC series, made him a regular in 2009. His co-star was the actress Jaime Ray Newman, who would later appear with him again in The Punisher. Eastwick was also canceled after one season. In 2010 he played Sgt. Manuel Rodriguez in the HBO miniseries The Pacific.

Shane Walsh, in Frank Darabont's The Walking Dead, brought him real critical success. The series is based on a comic book series of the same name. Bernthal was a regular until 2012, and he was nominated for the Breakout Performance - Male award at the 2011 Scream Awards. He reunited with Darabont on the TNT series Mob City. There he played LAPD Detective Joe Teague, a police officer in a corrupt 1940s Los Angeles. That show was canceled after one season. Later he played the NAACP attorney Michael H. Sussman in the HBO miniseries Show Me a Hero.

Guest spots on Numbers and Harry's Law filled other gaps in his schedule. In 2018 he came back to the series that made him known, in the season 9 episode titled "What Comes After."

  • In June 2015, Marvel announced that Bernthal would play Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, in the second season of Netflix's Daredevil. That season was released on the 18th of March 2016. Bernthal hesitated at first about joining a superhero franchise. What changed his mind was the work of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, or Daredevil, and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, or Kingpin, in the first season.

IGN called his performance "an absolutely stellar, gutting performance." The character's co-creator, the comic book writer Gerry Conway, named it a favorite on-screen version of the character. Conway said, "Jon Bernthal gives The Punisher the kind of pathos that's underneath the tough guy and I really like that."

Netflix had not originally ordered a solo series, yet it spun the character off anyway. The Punisher was released on the 17th of November 2017. Reviewers called his season one work a remarkable and intense performance with real emotional depth. Bernthal likes to perform his own stunts on the show. Netflix announced a second season on the 12th of December 2017, and it was released on the 18th of January 2019. The show was canceled a month after that season aired.

Bernthal's story with the character was not over. In March 2023 it was confirmed that he would reprise the role in the revival series Daredevil: Born Again for Disney+. The show premiered on the 4th of March 2025, with Bernthal in a few episodes. He then co-wrote and executive produced The Punisher: One Last Kill, a Marvel Studios Special Presentation for Disney+, and starred in it. It was released on the 12th of May 2026. In June 2025, it was also confirmed that he would appear as The Punisher in the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

  • Martin Scorsese's 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street gave Bernthal the role of Brad. Several critics groups cited the film's cast for ensemble work that year. The following year he played the southerner Grady Travis in the World War II film Fury, and critics praised the cast there as well. Denis Villeneuve's Sicario followed in 2015, and it won numerous awards. That year also brought supporting parts in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and We Are Your Friends.

Ben Affleck starred opposite him in the 2016 thriller The Accountant, where Bernthal played Brax. He returned to Brax in The Accountant 2 in 2025. In 2017 he appeared in Wind River, Taylor Sheridan's directorial debut, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival that year. He played Griff in Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, and he appeared in the prison drama Shot Caller.

Production on Ford v Ferrari began in the summer of 2018, with Bernthal playing the business magnate Lee Iacocca. The film was released in November 2019. He played the brother of a fisherman, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, in The Peanut Butter Falcon. In 2021 he joined The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel to HBO's The Sopranos. In King Richard, also from 2021, his supporting work drew a Best Supporting Actor award from the Detroit Film Critics Society. Earlier in his career, he had played Al Capone in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and appeared in Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer.

The Irish thriller Pilgrimage cast him as a character called The Mute. Bernthal prefers to stay in character on film sets, so he chose not to speak to the cast or crew for the first few weeks of production. The Hollywood Reporter said he "steals the film with his intense, nearly wordless performance." In Sweet Virginia, he played a gentle motel owner with Parkinson's disease, and critics praised that work too. Bernthal was also offered a role in the 2018 biopic First Man but declined because his daughter was ill.

Games have used his voice and his likeness as well. He appears as LT Cole D. Walker in both Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Two more films have stayed in development, Snow Ponies and Stingray, which pairs him with Joel Edgerton. In Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, an adaptation of the Odyssey due in 2026, Bernthal plays Menelaus.

  • In the HBO miniseries We Own This City, in 2022, Bernthal played Baltimore Police Department Sergeant Wayne Jenkins. The performance earned critical acclaim. Andy Greenwald of The Ringer said Bernthal gave "one of the great TV performances of this century." That same year he starred in the eight-episode series American Gigolo as Johnny, whose alter ego is "Julian."

Hulu's The Bear, which began in 2022, cast him as Mikey Berzatto. For the season two episode "Fishes," he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. He was nominated for his work in seasons one and three as well. In May 2026, FX released a surprise episode titled Gary, which appears on Hulu as its own title rather than as part of The Bear. It stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal in their roles from the series, and the two actors also wrote it.

The Amateur, an American espionage thriller, arrived in 2025. In January 2026 he starred as Detective Jack Harper opposite Tessa Thompson in the Netflix miniseries His & Hers.

Bernthal made his Broadway debut in the spring of 2026 in Dog Day Afternoon, Stephen Adly Guirgis's stage adaptation. Ebon Moss-Bachrach played opposite him. The run lasted from March to July 2026.

  • On the 18th of February 2022, Real Ones with Jon Bernthal debuted, a podcast he developed. Its guests include police officers, gang members, soldiers, doctors, activists and first responders. The premise is that none of them pushes an agenda and all of them speak honestly.

His brother Nicholas runs a nonprofit with him called Drops Fill Buckets. It is described as an "impact-driven, entrepreneurial approach to making a difference."

Bernthal is also an advocate of pit bull ownership and a spokesperson for the Animal Farm Foundation, which rescues pit bulls and promotes their equal treatment. He has three pit bulls of his own, and they often accompany him to set. Two of them, Boss and Venice, appeared in the film Rampart.

On the 25th of September 2010, he married Erin Angle in Potomac, Maryland. She is the niece of the WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle and of Kurt's brother Eric Angle, an amateur and professional wrestler. The family lives in Ojai, California. Bernthal is a fan of the Washington Commanders.

They have three children. One of them, Addie, appeared opposite her father in The Punisher: One Last Kill.
