  • John Hall was born at Carlton in Bedfordshire during the year 1575. He entered Queens' College, Cambridge in 1589 to begin his studies. The young student earned a Bachelor of Arts degree by 1593 and completed his Master of Arts in 1597. Hall became a physician without holding an English medical degree. Historians speculate he studied medicine in France instead. He established a practice in Stratford-upon-Avon where he served as the only doctor available. This isolation gave him significant influence over local health matters.

  • Hall married William Shakespeare's daughter Susanna on the 5th of June 1607. They lived together in a home known as Hall's Croft within Stratford-upon-Avon. Their union produced one child named Elizabeth. After Shakespeare died, the couple moved into New Place which had been the playwright's former residence. Records show they maintained a close relationship with the elder Shakespeare. They agreed on a local issue regarding enclosure in 1613. The pair also traveled together to London for business purposes in 1614. Today visitors can tour their original home in Stratford.

  • John Lane accused Susanna Hall of adultery with Ralph Smith during the year 1613. Smith was a thirty-five-year-old haberdasher from the town. Lane claimed she caught a venereal disease from this encounter. The Halls filed suit for slander against Lane in the Consistory Court at Worcester on the 15th of July. Robert Whatcott testified on behalf of the couple three years before witnessing Shakespeare's will. Lane failed to appear in court and was found guilty. He received excommunication as punishment for his actions. Later he participated in a riot protesting against Thomas Wilson.

  • Hall prepared two notebooks containing detailed case notes for future publication. James Cooke purchased these manuscripts after Hall's death and translated them from Latin. Cooke published the work in 1657 which was twenty-two years after John Hall died. The earliest recorded case dates back to 1611 within Stratford. This timeline confirms Hall lived and worked there since at least his marriage year. The first notebook still survives today while the second manuscript is lost. These records serve as significant early modern medical documents.

  • Peter Whelan wrote a play titled The Herbal Bed based on the slander case. Liam Cunningham played the role of John Hall in the original production. Tom Hiddleston portrayed him in A Waste of Shame: The Mystery of Shakespeare and His Sonnets. That TV film aired on BBC Four on the 22nd of November 2005. Hadley Fraser took on the role in the 2018 movie All Is True. Kenneth Branagh directed that final feature film about the playwright's later years. These adaptations keep the physician's story alive for contemporary audiences.
