  • British settlers established Jinja in 1901 on the north shore of Lake Victoria. The city sits at an average elevation above sea level near the source of the White Nile. Colonial planners later shaped its physical form under a specific urban scheme. German architect Ernst May designed this plan in 1948 for the region. He created what he called "neighbourhood units" to organize residential areas. Estates were built for the ruling elite outside the central city area. This planning strategy led to a 'slum clearance' operation during the 1950s. More than 1,000 residents were displaced from their homes by these actions. The name Jinja derives from the local term ejjinja meaning stones. Both Baganda and Busoga people used this word for the rocky area.

  • Construction of the Owen Falls Dam began in 1954 to harness river power. The project submerged Ripon Falls completely beneath rising water levels. Most Flat Rocks that gave the area its original name disappeared underwater forever. John Hanning Speke described the scene before the dam as having broad lake surfaces shut out by hills. He noted falls about twelve feet deep and four to five hundred feet broad broken by rocks. Thousands of passenger fish leaped at the falls with all their might according to his notes. Hippos and crocodiles lay sleepily on the water while fishermen took post on rocks. The roar of waters made an interesting picture for observers. The dam provided electricity but erased the physical landscape Speke documented.

  • Jinja became a focal point during the Uganda, Tanzania War of 1978, 1979. Ugandan President Idi Amin fled Kampala and initially escaped to Jinja. Journalist Nelson Bwire Kapo reported that Amin proclaimed Jinja the new capital of Uganda. He attempted to regroup remnants of the Uganda Army within the city limits. Elements of the local garrison known as the Eagle Colonel Gaddafi Battalion remained behind. These troops reportedly engaged in drunken behavior and harassment of civilians. Killings occurred among the civilian population before most soldiers deserted. On the 22nd of April 1979 Tanzanian forces assaulted Jinja after encountering little resistance. Civilian residents greeted the invading force with cheers as they occupied the city. Some looting accompanied the operation following the end of hostilities. Tanzanian officers later used Jinja as a hub to transport stolen goods including cars and coffee.

  • The Kakira Sugar Works serves as the biggest local employer in the region. This factory employs over 7,500 people according to available records. It burns bagasse byproducts from sugar manufacturing to generate 50 megawatts of electricity. The facility sells power to the national grid while processing cane locally. Cutting median wages reach about UGX:1,000 per day for workers. Nile Breweries Limited maintains headquarters in Njeru near the Source of the Nile. Bottles of Nile Beer were first consumed in 1956 after construction finished four years earlier. South African Breweries fully acquired the company in 2001. MM Integrated Steel Uganda Limited completed a $47 million plant to produce steel products. The facility produces 50,000 tonnes annually and directly employs 1,800 people. Bidco International Oil Refining Company operates a palm oil factory within the city limits.

  • The national census of 2002 estimated Jinja's population at 71,213 residents. That count included 36,325 males and 34,888 females. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics later estimated the population reached 82,800 in 2010. A 2011 estimate placed numbers at 89,700 before another census in 2014 showed 72,931. The Municipality Authority contested the 2014 data claiming it under-counted the actual population. On the 1st of July 2020 the government awarded city status to several municipalities including Jinja. This expansion added Bugembe Town Council and Mafubira sub-county to the official boundaries. The estimated population of the new city reached about 300,000 by October 2020. Most inhabitants are of Bantu origin with Lusoga as the main local language. Average annual household income remains estimated at US $100 for many families.

  • Construction on the Source of the Nile Bridge started in 2013 across the river. The completed structure was commissioned on the 17th of October 2018 connecting Njeru to Jinja. Jinja serves as a major station on the Uganda Railway system today. A small civilian and military airport exists at Kimaka about north of the central business district. The Kampala, Jinja Highway connects the town directly with the capital city. In 1993 construction began on a second power station at the source of the White Nile. That extension named Kiira Power Station was completed in 2003 producing 200 megawatts maximum. About north of Jinna lies the Bujagali Power Station providing 250 megawatts of electric power. Since 2015 the city has hosted the Nyege Nyege Festival at Discovery Beach in Njeru.
