• 1. Introduction

  The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame holds a distinction no other team museum can claim. It was the first hall of fame ever built to honor a single professional American football team. Other franchises would eventually follow, but Green Bay went first. Who thought Green Bay needed such a place, and what did it take to convince the team's legendary coach to say yes?

• 2. A Restaurateur's Idea

  William Brault ran a string of restaurants in Green Bay, and he never missed a chance to talk about the Packers. In 1966 he decided to act on a question he kept hearing from visitors. Tourists who wandered through Green Bay kept asking about the team's long history, and Brault sensed an opportunity in their curiosity. He took the idea to Vince Lombardi, the Packers' head coach, and proposed a hall of fame to attract and educate tourists about the Packers. Lombardi agreed, but he set one condition: the new hall could not interfere with the players still on the team.

  Brault also led the Green Bay Area Visitor and Convention Bureau, an organization he had helped establish two years earlier, in 1964. That civic role gave him a natural stage to pitch a hall of fame as a draw for the very tourists his bureau courted. Within a year, his idea would take physical form, though not yet in a home built to last.

• 3. Finding A Permanent Home

  The Packer Hall of Fame first opened as a series of exhibits in the lower concourse of the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena. It was not yet a permanent home, just a temporary set of displays for visitors. In 1967, organizers formed the Packer Hall of Fame Association, a corporate entity kept separate from the team itself. Six years later, in 1973, that association took the name Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, Inc.

  The Hall finally became a permanent site in 1976, dedicated on the 3rd of April by President Gerald Ford. The new building was an addition to the Brown County Veterans Arena, the same site as the original exhibits. Outside the entrance stood Receiver, a statue dedicated to the invention of the forward pass. This site remained the Hall's only home until Lambeau Field itself changed shape.

• 4. Moving Into Lambeau Field

  In 2003, renovations to Lambeau Field gave the Hall of Fame a new home inside the Lambeau Field Atrium. Packers legends Bart Starr and Ron Wolf rededicated the Hall on the 4th of September 2003, marking the move.

  In 2015, the Hall of Fame moved again, as part of a larger renovation of Lambeau Field. It went from the basement up to the second floor of the Atrium. Its new upstairs location set the stage for the collection now on display inside.

• 5. Inside The Hall

  Inside, visitors find a re-creation of Vince Lombardi's office set among a wide collection of Packers memorabilia. Plaques line the walls, one for every person inducted into the Hall. Alongside them sit the Lombardi Trophies won from Green Bay's four Super Bowl victories. Each plaque tells one part of a growing story, and the newest names keep joining the list every year.

• 6. The Inductees

  As of its most recent induction, the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame has inducted 171 people. Of those, 30 also hold a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1995, the Hall inducted its own founder, listed in the induction records simply as the Hall of Fame founder. Other honorees have included a trainer, a team physician, a journalist, a scout, a band director, and a team historian. Still others have been recognized as a video director or a sports commentator, alongside the players. In 2007, LeRoy Butler joined the Hall as a defensive back. In August 2025, Mark Murphy became the most recent name added to the Hall, inducted just a month after stepping down as the team's president.

• 7. A Hall For The Fans

  In 1998, the Packers and the Packers Hall of Fame created what they call the Green Bay Packers FAN Hall of Fame. It was the first hall of fame ever built to honor fans of a professional football team. Nomination requires only an essay of 500 words or less, and fans may put forward themselves or someone else they think deserves recognition. A selection committee narrows the nominees down to ten finalists each year, and fans then vote to choose a winner from among them.

  Twenty-seven fans have been inducted into the Fan Hall of Fame so far. Each year, the nominee who receives the most votes is named that year's honorary fan and formally inducted. Their name is displayed inside the Packers Hall of Fame itself. They also receive prizes, including tickets to a Packers game and a gift card to the team's pro shop. Honorary fans have come from small Wisconsin towns like Fence and Mazomanie, and from as far away as Dyersburg, Tennessee, and Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
