  • Granada Reports began as Northern Newscast in May 1956 when the station first started broadcasting. The programme evolved through several name changes including People and Places, Scene at 6.30, Six-O-One, and Newsday before settling on its current brand in 1973. Early broadcasts featured Travelling Eye outside broadcasts that covered regional news and sport regularly within programming. A topical magazine called People and Places appeared within a year of the station's launch. This show became notable for featuring some of the earliest television appearances by The Beatles. In 1958 Granada produced three Travelling Eye programmes covering the Rochdale by-election. The station also created Welsh language output until 1962 with daily bulletins and Dewch i Mewn for North Wales viewers. Scene at 6.30 replaced People and Places in January 1963 and broke news of John F. Kennedy's assassination following a tip-off from CBS News. Late night editions of Scene ran alongside Granada in the North which later became On Air starting in 1964. These strands replaced continuity junctions with local summaries and features. After franchise changes in 1968 Scene was axed and replaced by six self-contained regional programmes preceded by short Granada News bulletins. The flagship evening programme relaunched as Granada Tonight in January 1990 before returning to Manchester headquarters in 1992.
