Dražan Jerković

• 1. Introduction

  Dražan Jerković was born in Šibenik on the 6th of August 1936, when the town still sat inside the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. People occasionally misspell his first name as Dražen, an error that still turns up in references to his career. He grew into a forward good enough to play at multiple World Cups and a European Championship. Decades later, he returned to football to lead a country that did not exist during his playing days. What pushed his club career to an early stop just as he reached his peak? And what did it mean for a Yugoslav-era player to lead Croatia's first national team after independence?

• 2. Peak Form, Early Exit

  Dinamo Zagreb signed Jerković in 1954, launching a professional career that would run until 1966. He spent eleven years there as a forward before finishing his playing days with Belgian side La Gantoise in 1965-66. Serious injuries brought his career to an early end, arriving just as he reached his best form. With Dinamo, he had already claimed a league title in 1958 and league cup wins in 1960 and 1965.

  Season-by-season league records credit him with 142 appearances and 96 goals across those years. Overall career figures for his time at Dinamo are listed separately, at 315 games and 300 goals. His single season with La Gantoise added three league appearances and one goal to his career total.

  His next appearances came far from Zagreb, in Yugoslavia's shirt at two different World Cups.

• 3. Yugoslavia's World Stage

  Jerković earned his first cap for Yugoslavia in 1960 and his last in 1964, finishing with 11 goals in 21 games. Before those caps piled up, he had already traveled with Yugoslavia's squad to the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He never took the field there.

  Two years later, at the first UEFA European Championship in 1960, Jerković scored twice against France in the semifinal, a match Yugoslavia won 5-4. Yugoslavia then lost the final to the USSR 2-1 after extra time, finishing as runners-up.

  His very last international appearance came in a friendly against Austria, in September 1964. Years earlier, though, he had also turned out once for a different national team altogether.

• 4. One Cap for Croatia

  In 1956, the Croatian national team took the field for the only time under communist Yugoslavia, a single friendly against Indonesia. Jerković was part of that one-off Croatia side, the sole appearance he ever made in a Croatian shirt as a player.

  That 1956 cap stayed in the record books for decades. His next tie to Croatian football would come from the touchline, not the pitch.

• 5. From Pitch to Touchline

  Croatia's national team played its first matches after independence between 1990 and 1992, and Jerković was the manager chosen to lead them. This put him in charge of a national side that had not existed for most of his own playing career.

  He died in Zagreb on the 6th of December 2008, more than a decade after leaving that post.
