Dennis Kennedy (author)
Kennedy earned his PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1972 after graduate work at Oxford. For ten years he taught literature and theatre at Grand Valley State in western Michigan. Under the initiative of Michael Birtwistle he helped establish an alternative theatre called Stage 3 in Grand Rapids. At Stage 3 he acted, directed, wrote plays, and founded the Michigan New Plays Festival. In 1973 he served as Senior Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Karachi in Pakistan. By 1983 he moved to the University of Pittsburgh to direct graduate studies in theatre. His own plays had already been performed in art theatres in New York and London by that time.
His scholarly books on theatre published by Oxford and Cambridge university presses brought a different type of recognition. Granville Barker and the Dream of Theatre re-evaluated the importance of England's foundational director Peter Hall. Looking at Shakespeare reviewed design and visual elements in twentieth-century production. The book argued that meaning depends on what is seen just as much as what is spoken. Foreign Shakespeare followed as a volume emphasizing performance significance in Europe and outside English. By the time Shakespeare in Asia released some fifteen years later, scholarship noted a shift from Anglo-centred approaches. James C. Bulman introduced this change in The Oxford Handbook of Shakespeare and Performance in 2017.
In 1994 Kennedy became the inaugural holder of the Samuel Beckett Chair of Drama and Theatre at Trinity College Dublin. He remained there until retirement while founding a film studies program. In collaboration with the Abbey Theatre and the Irish Film Institute he established training programs for actors and filmmakers. He directed many new plays alongside classical works. In Beijing in 2005 he directed Shakespeare's As You Like It. Two years later in Dublin he directed Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle. His work spanned diverse cultural contexts including locations in China and Ireland.
Kennedy began writing short stories in 2013 which appeared in literary magazines like The Antioch Review and New Letters. Notable examples include The Woman on the Fifth Floor published in 2019 and Dutchtown appearing in 2015. Of about twenty stories written, several were featured in Slice Magazine and Confrontation. Fossil Light: A Novel in Films was published by Blackrock Press Dublin in 2023. This novel represents his transition into fiction after decades of academic and theatrical work. His most recent book Creating Jesus consolidates a lifelong interest in Christianity history and contemporary culture.
He won the Freedley Award for theatre history twice during his career. Kennedy received the Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award at Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Arts Council Award for playwriting. Three major awards came from the US National Endowment for the Humanities. He earned the Berkeley Fellowship in Trinity College Dublin and was elected to both Academia Europaea and the Royal Irish Academy. In 2021 he gave the opening address to the World Shakespeare Congress in Singapore. He continues to lecture globally while holding fellowships from Berlin to Beijing including visiting professorships at universities in Canada and the United States.
