  Jean Massin's name sat beside Brigitte Massin's on book after book of music writing, a marriage that doubled as a working partnership. Together the pair published numerous works on music. Their first joint publication appeared in 1955 and proved substantial enough to reach a second edition by 1967. Further joint titles followed in 1959, 1970-1987 and 1997, a partnership that stretched across more than four decades of shared bylines. Under the same roof, though, another kind of art was already taking hold, one that had nothing to do with any of these books.

  Béatrice Massin grew up to become a specialist in Baroque dance, choosing a discipline of her own within a family otherwise absorbed by classical composers. She was Brigitte Massin's daughter, the one relative the record singles out by name. Her mother, meanwhile, kept her closest attention fixed on a small group of composers whose lives she would spend years writing about.

  Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Beethoven were the three composers at the center of Brigitte Massin's biographical writing. She wrote extensively on figures from the classical and romantic periods, but these three names recur as her particular specialty. Her solo publications appeared later than her joint work, beginning in 1977. More solo titles followed in 1989 and in 1991, with two separate works both dated to 1991. The last of her listed publications appeared in 1999. It closed out a record that carried her name, sometimes alone and sometimes alongside another, across nearly half a century of writing about music.
