  • the 19th of October 1965 marks the birth of James Darrell Edwards III. His father served as a United States Army Colonel at Kennedy Space Center during the historic Apollo 11 launch. Boris the Animal murdered the elder Edwards while he was working security for that mission. The alien killer acted after the older Edwards helped Agent K stop events that would have led to a massive invasion of Earth forty years later. Nothing else is known about the preceding twenty-eight years of his life before recruitment.

  • Officer Edwards III runs down a swift wall-climbing alien on foot in New York City. Men in Black Agent K notices his potential and recruits him into the organization. J becomes registered as Agent J with an energetic attitude that brings humor to a bland organization. He is not fond of K's diminutive references like son or sport but gets used to them. Their first official mission involves stopping an alien bug from leaving Earth with a tiny galaxy before the Arquillians disintegrate the planet. During the final confrontation, K is swallowed by the bug to get his gun back. J keeps the creature on Earth until K shoots it from inside. Dr. Laurel Weaver kills the bug and becomes J's new partner known as Agent L.

  • J carries a signature weapon called the Noisy Cricket throughout his career. In the animated series, he attaches a Silencer to make the device less noisy. He encounters Frank the Pug who is actually an alien dog. J also discovers that Jeebs, a pawn store owner, is really an alien rather than just a buyer of stolen goods. A line of dialogue from Men in Black II suggests he owned a Game Boy. His enthusiasm for video games and rap music defines parts of his civilian life prior to joining the agency.

  • In 2012, J has become a well-respected Rank Men in Black agent working alongside K. He continues to work with K but is frustrated by K keeping secrets from him. The escaped alien criminal Boris the Animal time-travels back to 1969 and murders a young K. This act could result in the end of the world since K was no longer present to establish a force field protecting Earth from invasion by the Boglodites. Between the first and second film, J neuralyzes all of Laurel Weaver's successors due to their unsuitability. He forces Agent T to admit that he joined the agency to be a hero which is fundamentally impossible in the secretive organization. Zed confronts J and tells him he needs to stop neuralyzing his partners despite these shortcomings.

  • Throughout the animated series, Agent J is continually treated like a rookie. He is rarely allowed to drive an official Men in Black Car or handle certain equipment. Many secrets are kept from him while he remains the partner of Agent K. During his short period of termination in the episode The J Is For James Syndrome, it is shown that J lived with an aunt named Rose. Rose is known for making meatloaf for herself and her nephew during dinner. Keith Diamond voices the character in this animated adaptation rather than Will Smith.

  • Will Smith portrays Agent J in the Men in Black film franchise starting in 1997. He also appears as the character in the amusement park ride Men in Black: Alien Attack at Universal Studios Florida. A chronological mistake exists in the 1997 film where Kay deletes his identity but shows his date of birth as the 19th of October 1969 instead of 1965. The character's energetic personality brings humor to the otherwise bland organization throughout the movies.

  • Agent J serves as one of the two protagonists of the Men in Black film series alongside Agent K. His reception has influenced merchandise and pop culture since the 1997 release. References to the character appear in other works like Waiting in the Summer where Ichika Takatsuki fears being captured by him. A cameo appearance occurs in a painting inside High-T's office within Men in Black: International. The franchise continues to reference the original dynamic between the rookie officer and the veteran agent.
