Absolute Universe
In the Absolute Universe, the Justice League is an alliance made up of the Joker, Ra's al Ghul, Hector Hammond, Veronica Cale and Elenore Thawne. This is a DC Comics imprint overseen by writer Scott Snyder, and it shares almost nothing with the DC Universe readers already know. Bruce Wayne here is a blue-collar civil engineer who works with an MI6 special agent named Alfred Pennyworth. The stories unfold in a shared setting designated Alpha-World, part of the wider DC multiverse. Familiar names appear in unfamiliar lives. Why would a publisher build a second universe beside its established one? What force reshaped this world so that heroes are treated as underdogs? Who was trusted to write and draw it? And how did readers respond to a line of comics that rebuilt the company's best-known characters from the ground up?
Rumors about a new universe connected to Scott Snyder first circulated in 2023. Leaks later supplied its name, the Absolute Universe, and a wider program called DC All In. More leaks arrived in the run-up to San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, where DC Comics made the announcement official. The imprint debuted in the aftermath of the 2024 storyline "Absolute Power".
The DC All In Special, published on the 2nd of October 2024, opened the line. Its credited writers were Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson. Absolute Batman followed on the 9th of October 2024, written by Snyder and drawn by Nick Dragotta. Absolute Wonder Woman, by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman, arrived two weeks later on the 23rd of October.
Absolute Superman reached shelves on the 6th of November 2024, written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Rafa Sandoval. Sandoval was not the original choice. Rafael Albuquerque had been set to illustrate the book but withdrew because of severe floods in his home country of Brazil. Sandoval joined the project in June 2024.
The new universe also reached into the main DC line. In DC K.O. #3, Absolute versions of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman appear at the end of an issue from a series in which Darkseid wants to transform DC's Prime Earth. That wish follows directly from the creation of the Absolute Universe, and Darkseid is the key to how this world works.
Scott Snyder has a short way of describing the difference between the two universes. The DC Universe, he says, is "influenced by Superman energy". The Absolute Universe is "influenced by Darkseid energy".
The setting is Earth-Alpha, also called the Elseworld. It is one of the two pillars of the Metaverse. The other is Earth-Omega, where Darkseid used to be imprisoned. The DC All In Special establishes that Darkseid's essence has reshaped Earth-Alpha. He wants a world driven by challenge and turmoil, where heroes are the "small chaos" rather than settled parts of its system. He is also trying to control its past and future while the timeline gradually consolidates on modern times.
The universe borrows ideas from three earlier stories. These are Doomsday Clock, which ran from 2017 to 2019, Dark Nights: Death Metal, from 2020 to 2021, and Infinite Frontier, from 2021 to 2023.
Two kinds of difference separate this world from the mainline DC universe. The first is power. The rich and wealthy largely dominate politics and rule without repercussion, leaving the world's heroes at a severe disadvantage. The second is worldbuilding. The New Gods are absent, and certain aliens, such as Martians, have no physical bodies. The people who live under this arrangement are the next question.
The DC All In Special shows what the rebuilding looks like in practice. Vital parts of the characters are stripped away, such as Batman's wealth, Diana's childhood and Superman's upbringing with the Kents. The central message and key personality traits of each hero stay intact.
Bruce Wayne's mother, Martha, is still alive. His close friends include Waylon Jones, Edward Nygma, Harvey Dent, Oswald Cobblepot, Mitchell "Matches" Malone and Selina Kyle.
Kal-El grew up on Krypton before its destruction. On Earth he lives as an illegal immigrant, accompanied by an AI companion named Sol, which serves as both his cape and his Fortress of Solitude. His close friends include Lois Lane, a corporate soldier, and Jimmy Olsen, a terrorist.
Diana grew up in Hell. Her adoptive mother is Circe, and Greek gods mentored her. Zeus separated her from the Amazons at birth.
Wally West kills Barry Allen by accident. After gaining his superpowers he is a loose fugitive, accompanied by a mutant monkey named Grodd.
John Jones is a human police detective. A severe head trauma leaves his mind invaded by a non-physical alien. Of all the powers reworked in this universe, the light of the Lanterns received the most thorough overhaul.
Four colors make up the emotional spectrum of the Absolute Universe. Black is qard, meaning chaotic action. Red is rao, meaning restraint from action. Green is sur, meaning correct action. Yellow is aur, meaning enlightenment. This is a shorter spectrum than the one in the mainline DC universe.
Sojourner Mullein is an ex-cop who becomes an anomalous user of the green light. The word for such a user is "tomar". An "abin" is someone who uses the light with understanding, and the name Abin Sur follows from that term.
Inexperienced users are called "ain", and they introduce the levels of light to Earth. Hal Jordan is the Black Hand, an Ain Quard. Guy Gardner is an Ain Rao, and John Stewart is an Ain Aur. Officers Cameron Chase and Simon Baz are also among them.
Tomar-Re is a Tomar Rao. Kilowog and the Blackstars are Abin Quards, and they are led by Mogo the Living Planet. The second collected volume of Absolute Green Lantern is titled Sojourner.
Jeff Lemire and Nick Robles launched Absolute Flash on the 19th of March 2025, with Adriano Lucas on colors. Al Ewing and Jahnoy Lindsay followed on the 2nd of April 2025 with Absolute Green Lantern. Both run as ongoing series, alongside Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman.
Some titles are limited series. Absolute Martian Manhunter, by Deniz Camp and Javier Rodríguez, began on the 26th of March 2025 and ended with its twelfth issue on the 17th of June 2026. Absolute Green Arrow, by Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque, runs for six issues from the 20th of May 2026. Absolute Catwoman, by Che Grayson, Scott Snyder and the artist Bengal, debuted on the 10th of June 2026.
One-shots fill in the edges. A Free Comic Book Day special appeared on the 3rd of May 2025, with Dan Slott and Jeff Lemire among its writers. Absolute Evil, written by Al Ewing, came out on the 1st of October 2025. Absolute Batman: Ark M Special, by Scott Snyder and Frank Tieri, followed on the 7th of January 2026.
Collected editions gather the single issues into volumes. The first Absolute Batman volume, The Zoo, collects issues 1-6 in a 176-page hardcover. The second, Abomination, runs 240 pages. Absolute Wonder Woman opens with The Last Amazon, and Absolute Superman opens with Last Dust of Krypton. Whether readers wanted any of this was settled by the sales figures.
Roughly 250,000 copies is the print run reported for the first issue of Absolute Batman. Combined sales of its first, second, third and black-and-white printings reached just under 400,000. That made it the best-selling comic of 2024. Absolute Wonder Woman #1 drew initial orders of around 150,000, and Absolute Superman had a print run of about 180,000 copies.
By February 2025, the line had sold over 2.5 million units. A second wave of titles then arrived. Absolute Flash #1 drew over 180,000 pre-orders, which made it the best-selling Flash comic since the original Flash #1 of 1987. Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 sold over 120,000 copies.
As of December 2025, the Absolute Universe line had sold over 8.5 million units. Absolute Batman was the top-selling title at nearly 3 million.
In February 2026, DC Comics announced a reprint of 50 Absolute Universe issues, due in March 2026. Each would receive at least a third reprinting. The March 2026 releases saw Absolute Batman #1 reach its 11th reprinting. Awards panels were paying attention too.
The Eisner Awards entries for 2025 list Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman in the Best New Series category. Kelly Thompson appears under Best Writer for Absolute Wonder Woman, and Nick Dragotta under Best Penciller/Inker for Absolute Batman. Hayden Sherman is listed for cover art and Jordie Bellaire for coloring. In lettering, Becca Carey appears for Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman, and Clayton Cowles for Absolute Batman.
The 2026 entries are broader. Absolute Batman 2025 Annual #1, by Daniel Warren Johnson, James Harren and Meredith McClaren, appears for Best One-Shot/Single Issue, as does Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 by Deniz Camp and Javier Rodriguez. Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman are listed for Best Continuing Series, and Absolute Martian Manhunter for Best Limited Series. Camp, Snyder and Thompson all appear under Best Writer. Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou is listed for lettering on Absolute Martian Manhunter.
The universe has also influenced work outside the comics line. The Absolute Universe version of Brainiac inspired the DC Universe version of the character in the film Man of Tomorrow.
The imprint has even been parodied. The one-shot Mad About DC, released on the 1st of April 2026, carries two short stories. "The Punt" is written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by James Herron. "Absolute Cash-In" is written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Bruno Redondo. Between them, they introduce Absolute versions of Maxie Zeus and Condiment King.
