A Hard Day's Night (album)
The Beatles arrived at EMI Pathé Marconi Studios in Paris on the 29th of January 1964 for their first recording session outside London. Producer George Martin explained that they recorded German-language versions of two recent singles because the band could not sell large quantities of records in Germany unless they were sung in German. They titled these tracks Komm gib mir deine Hand and Sie liebt dich respectively. Paul McCartney's Can't Buy Me Love was also recorded there in English and completed within just four takes. This international trip marked a significant shift from their usual work at EMI Studios in London.
A Hard Day's Night became the band's first album to contain all-original material penned by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The record features George Harrison playing a Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar on several songs. This specific sound influenced groups like the Byrds and other bands emerging in the folk rock genre during 1965. Music journalist Robert Christgau noted that the songs were more sophisticated musically than previous efforts. The lack of rock and roll covers allowed listeners to hear the group's new modernist terms without distraction.
The American version of the album appeared on United Artists Records on the 26th of June 1964, two weeks before the UK release. United Artists rushed the album into stores over a month before the film opened in the US on the 11th of August 1964. The North American track listing included orchestral instrumental versions arranged by George Martin conducting an orchestra of studio musicians. Bob Stanley identified this album as the one that best captures the band's early-career appeal in his book Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!. The record was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000. It also appeared at number 307 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2012 before rising to number 263 in the 2020 revision. Critics from NME and Mojo have consistently ranked it among the greatest albums ever published.
The album officially released on compact disc in mono on the 26th of February 1987 alongside three other early Beatles records. A remastered version arrived on the 9th of September 2009, marking the first time the album appeared in stereo on compact disc in its entirety. This release included the track in true stereo for all songs. A 60th anniversary reissue came out on the 19th of October 2024 to celebrate National Album Day. The American version received a vinyl reissue in 2024 using original master tapes as part of The Beatles: 1964 U.S. Albums in Mono collection.
