2026 FIFA World Cup qualification (AFC)

• 1. Introduction

  On the 27th of July 2023, Kuala Lumpur hosted the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification for the Asian Football Confederation. Nine places were available for Asian teams: eight direct World Cup berths and one more through inter-confederation play-offs. A revamped format, announced on the 1st of August 2022, organized the campaign as five sequential rounds. The process ran from October 2023 to November 2025. The first two rounds also served as qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. A team knocked out of the World Cup race in those early stages could still be competing for an Asian Cup place. The first round opened on the 12th of October 2023. The field's twenty lowest-ranked nations faced each other first, competing for the right to enter the second stage.

• 2. The First Three Rounds

  All FIFA-affiliated AFC member nations entered the joint qualifying process. One AFC member, Northern Mariana Islands, held no FIFA affiliation. They would have entered through the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification play-off route, but the AFC excluded them from that draw. The 26 highest-ranked nations, based on the July 2023 FIFA World Rankings, received direct byes into the second round. The 20 lowest-ranked sides, those ranked 27th-46th, played home-and-away over two legs, with the return legs completed on the 17th of October 2023. The ten match winners advanced to the second round. The ten losers were sorted by their results. The highest-placed loser entered the third round of AFC Asian Cup qualification. The remaining losers entered the Asian Cup play-off round.

  The second round assembled 36 teams, comprising the 26 byes and the ten first-round winners, into nine groups of four. Each team played every other group member home and away. Nine group winners and nine runners-up advanced to the third round and earned automatic places at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. The sides finishing third or fourth in each second-round group entered AFC Asian Cup qualifying separately.

  Third-round competition opened in September 2024, with 18 teams divided into three groups of six. Each team played every other group member twice. The top two finishers in each group, six teams total, qualified directly for the 2026 World Cup. Third- and fourth-placed sides moved into a fourth round. That stage opened with its first match day on the 8th of October 2025.

• 3. The Final Stages

  Six teams entered the fourth round with World Cup places still available. Unlike every earlier stage, those matches were contested at a centralized venue rather than home and away. The six teams were sorted into two groups of three, each team playing the other two members of their group once. The two group winners qualified for the 2026 World Cup. The two runners-up, one from each group, advanced to the fifth round. On the 13th of November 2025, the fifth round's first legs were played, with the return legs following on the 18th of November. Iraq won the fifth round, becoming Asia's representative at the inter-confederation play-offs.

• 4. Asia at the Play-offs

  Bolivia represented CONMEBOL at the inter-confederation play-offs. DR Congo came from CAF, Jamaica and Suriname from CONCACAF, and New Caledonia from the Oceania Football Confederation. Rankings from the November 2025 FIFA Men's World Ranking determined the bracket structure. The four lowest-ranked sides met in two single-elimination matches. The winners then faced the two highest-ranked teams in a further set of single-elimination matches. The two victors qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With the play-offs concluded, attention turned to the teams that had already secured direct places from the AFC's qualifying rounds.

• 5. Histories of the Qualifiers

  One team among the AFC's qualifiers held eleven previous World Cup appearances, its first coming in 1954. From 1986 onward, that same side had not missed a World Cup through 2022, an unbroken run of ten campaigns. Another side had reached seven consecutive World Cups, qualifying at every tournament from 1998 to 2022. Three teams each carried six prior appearances, though their debut qualifications came in different eras: 1974, 1978, and 1994 respectively. Two teams were entering the World Cup for the first time. One other team in the group had appeared only at the 1986 World Cup. Forty years would separate that sole previous campaign from their return in 2026.
