  On the 1st of August 2022, the Asian Football Confederation announced a revamped qualification format for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This new structure allocated eight direct qualifying slots and one inter-confederation play-off slot to Asian teams. The process was designed as five distinct rounds of competition. The first two rounds also served as qualifiers for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. Twenty teams ranked between 27th and 46th entered the first round. These twenty sides played home-and-away over two legs. Ten winners advanced to the second round. The best loser from this stage qualified for the third round of the Asian Cup tournament. The remaining teams moved into the Asian Cup play-off round.

• 2. Seeding Mechanics In Kuala Lumpur

  A draw ceremony took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on the 27th of July 2023. Officials used this event to determine groupings for the first and second rounds. The top 26 ranked teams received byes directly to the second round. The 20 teams entering the first round were seeded into two pots of ten teams each. Draw officials paired teams alternately from pot 1 then pot 2. The team from pot 1 hosted the first leg while the team from pot 2 hosted the second leg. Pots 1, 2, and 3 contained teams ranked 1, 9, 10, 18, and 19, 26 respectively. Pot 4 held placeholders for the ten winners of the first round ties. Nine teams were drawn from pot 4 first and placed in position 4 of each group. The tenth team from pot 4 was moved to Pot 3 before being drawn at random.

• 3. Match Calendar From October To November

  The competition schedule stretched from October 2023 through November 2025. First round matches began with a home leg on the 12th of October 2023. The return leg followed five days later on the 17th of October 2023. Second round matchday one occurred on the 16th of November 2023. Matchday two took place four days after that on the 21st of November 2023. Third round fixtures started on the 5th of September 2024 and concluded by the 10th of June 2025. Fourth round matches were played in centralized venues during October 2025. The fifth round determined the Asian representative for the inter-confederation play-offs. These final qualifiers took place over two legs on the 13th of November 2025 and the 18th of November 2025.

  Several national teams secured spots in the final tournament through this qualification process. Japan qualified as the first AFC team, marking their seventh appearance in FIFA World Cup history. Their previous tournaments included 1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022. Australia made their eleventh appearance, having debuted in 1954 before joining the Asian confederation later. Saudi Arabia reached the finals with six prior appearances spanning from 1994 to 2022. Iran qualified for their sixth consecutive tournament since 1994. Iraq earned a spot after winning the fifth round against another second-placed team from the fourth round.
