2010 FIBA World Championship
On the 5th of December 2004, a decision was made in Kuala Lumpur that would change basketball history for Turkey. Three bids from six countries presented their final proposals to FIBA's 20-member Central Board. France won the first round of voting, but Turkey eventually secured the hosting rights after a joint bid from former Yugoslav republics Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Slovenia were eliminated early. This marked the first time Turkey hosted the event since its inception in 1950. The tournament became the first World Championship held in Europe since Greece hosted in 1998. Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Russia, and Puerto Rico had announced intentions to bid but withdrew before the vote took place.
Four cities hosted games during the preliminary rounds: Kayseri, Istanbul, Ankara, and İzmir. Each group played in a single arena within these locations. Group A used Kadir Has Arena in Kayseri with a capacity of 7,500. Group B games occurred at Abdi İpekçi Arena in Istanbul holding 12,500 spectators. Group C matches took place at Ankara Arena which opened in 2010 with 11,000 seats. Group D utilized Halkapınar Sport Hall in İzmir for 10,000 fans. The knockout phase moved exclusively to Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul where up to 22,500 people could watch. Two new arenas were built specifically for this championship while three others underwent renovations to meet international standards.
Turkey automatically qualified as host nation on the 5th of December 2004 when Kuala Lumpur voted. United States received an automatic berth after winning the 2008 Olympic men's basketball tournament held from 10, the 24th of August 2008 in Beijing. The draw for the Championship took place in Istanbul on the 15th of December 2009 at Ciragan Palace Kempinski Hotel. Teams were divided into four groups of six: A, B, C, and D. Top four finishers in each group advanced to sixteen team single-elimination knockout stage. European teams proved most successful with nine of ten advancing while only Germany failed to progress. Defending champions Spain struggled early losing two of first three games before recovering to finish second in Group D. Argentina and United States cruised to knockout phase as US went 5, 0 and Argentina went 4, 1 with their sole loss coming against Number 5 ranked Serbia. Tie-breaking procedures included game results between tied teams followed by goal average calculations then drawing lots if needed.
Group A teams met Group B teams while Group C faced Group D during round of 16 play. The final match saw United States defeat host nation Turkey after going undefeated throughout opening rounds. Kevin Durant scored 38 points against China on the 9th of November 2010 setting individual high marks. United States won 9, 0 overall record defeating Turkey in championship game. Fourteen teams paid 500,000 euro fees earlier but only eight reached semifinal wild card status.
