Makoto Shinkai visited the fishing village of Yuriage on the 14th of July 2011. This trip occurred three days after a massive earthquake struck the area and inspired his initial film idea.
Yojiro Noda composed the score while leading the rock band Radwimps. Four songs performed by Radwimps appear in the film alongside instrumental tracks, with some recorded in both Japanese and English versions.
