The World Zionist Organization was established between August 29 and the 31st of August 1897 in Basel, Switzerland. Theodor Herzl stood before delegates to create this international movement dedicated to forming a Jewish homeland.
In January 1960 the organization changed its name to World Zionist Organization under a new constitution that barred individual Jews from direct membership. Only organizations became eligible for membership instead of individuals who previously purchased the Zionist Shekel to vote for delegates at congresses.
The Jewish National Fund manages almost all funding for the World Zionist Organization today while owning thirteen percent of land in Israel. Ninety-eight percent of financial resources flow through this entity which receives money when the Israel Land Authority rents or sells property for residential or commercial use.
Theodor Herzl served as president from 1897 until his death in 1904 followed by Max Nordau acting as de facto leader between 1904 and 1905. Chaim Weizmann held the position twice spanning from 1921 to 1931 and again from 1935 to 1946 before Nahum Goldmann led the organization from 1956 to 1968.
A document presented to Israel's Supreme Court in 2009 revealed that nine homes in Ofra were built on territory ruled off-limits by Israeli authorities. The Justice Ministry confirmed ownership belonged to Palestinians while ordering demolition of those nine houses after the Israeli government used the World Zionist Organization to settle citizens in occupied territories since the 14th of May 1948.
