Wembley Arena was built for the 1934 British Empire Games and originally named the Empire Pool. Its 200-foot swimming pool hosted the games' swimming events. The pool was last used for competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics.
Sir Owen Williams designed the Empire Pool without employing an architect. He used three hinged concrete arches with cantilevers meeting at the centre, eliminating the need for internal pillars. The concrete frame spanned 240 feet, the largest such span of any comparable structure in the world at the time.
