From 1985 to 1990 Vladimir Putin served as a liaison officer to the Stasi secret police and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. The official Kremlin site states that the East German regime awarded him a bronze medal for faithful service to their National People's Army.
He was inaugurated on the 7th of May 2000 and served until 2008 before returning to power in 2012. This inauguration followed his victory in the presidential election held in March 2000.
