Valabhi University was an important centre of Buddhist learning that championed the cause of Hinayana Buddhism between 600 CE and 1400 CE. Its curriculum went beyond religious study to include political science, business, administration, law, and economics.
Valabhi University was located in Valabhi, which served as the capital of the Maitraka empire from 480-775 CE and functioned as a major port for international trade in Saurashtra. The site survives today in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, in western India, and corresponds to the old state of Vala.
The Chinese traveler Yijing visited Valabhi toward the end of the 7th century and judged its education to be on par with Nalanda, the Buddhist monastic centre in Bihar. The pilgrim Xuanzang had visited earlier, in the middle of the 7th century, and counted more than 6000 monks studying there.
Valabhi University also taught Brahmanical sciences alongside Buddhist doctrine and drew Brahmanic students as well as Buddhist ones. Its courses included Niti, covering political science and statesmanship, Varta, covering business and agriculture, along with administration, law, and economics and accountancy.
In September 2017, the Indian central government began considering a proposal to revive Valabhi University. The proposal came from an organisation called Sanghkaya, and the Union ministry of culture agreed to take it up.
Gunamati and Sthiramati were two of Valabhi University's Panditas, though little is known about the other scholars and teachers who taught there. The Panditas' stamp of approval on a scholar's doctrines was valued highly in learned assemblies across many kingdoms.
