The United States Army War College was formally created on the 27th of November 1901 through General Order 155. Secretary of War Elihu Root and President Theodore Roosevelt established the institution following lessons learned in the Spanish-American War.
The United States Army War College is located at Fort Leavenworth before moving one year later to its present location in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The current campus spans 500 acres within the historic Carlisle Barracks grounds.
Notable graduates include Dwight D. Eisenhower from the class of 1928, George S. Patton Jr. who completed his studies in 1932, and Omar Bradley who earned his degree in 1934. International leaders such as Muhammadu Buhari and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also graduated from the institution.
On the 2nd of October 2025, the United States Army War College became a direct reporting unit to the Chief of Staff of the Army under new command structures. The institution was reassigned to the Combined Arms Command which is a subordinated unit of the United States Army Transformation and Training Command.
Approximately 800 students attend the college at any given time with half enrolled in a two-year-long distance learning program. The other half participate in an on-campus full-time resident program lasting ten months that leads to a master's degree in Strategic Studies.
