Akbar was born in 1542 in Amarkot, the city now known as Umerkot, in the Sindh province of present-day Pakistan. His father Humayun had been driven from power by Sher Shah Suri and was given refuge there by the Sodha Rajput chieftain Rana Parshad.
Umerkot is named after Umer Soomro, a local ruler from the Soomra dynasty of Sindh. His story appears in the Umar Marvi folk tale and in Shah Jo Risalo, one of the popular tragic romances of Sindh.
Umerkot and its fort were transferred to the British in 1843 when the Maharaja of Jodhpur traded the city in exchange for a ten-thousand-rupee reduction in the tribute imposed on Jodhpur State. The British subsequently incorporated it into the Bombay Presidency of British India.
According to the 2023 census, Umerkot had a population of 144,558.
Rana Chandra Singh was a federal minister, the chieftain of the Hindu Sodha Thakur Rajput clan, and one of the founding members of the Pakistan Peoples Party. He was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan from Umarkot seven times between 1977 and 1999, then founded the Pakistan Hindu Party in 1999.
Umerkot is home to the Shiv Mandir, described as one of the most ancient and sacred Hindu temples in Sindh, as well as a Kali Mata Temple, a Krishna Mandir at old Amarkot, and the Manhar Mandir Kathwari Mandir at Rancho Line.
