Umar Shaikh Mirza I, born in 1356 and died in February 1394, was a son of the Central Asian conqueror Timur and a member of the Timurid dynasty. He served as a military commander and regional governor, administering Fergana from 1376 and later the Persian province of Fars.
Umar Shaikh Mirza I died in 1394 after being shot in the neck by an arrow fired from the Tuz Khurmatu fortress, near Baghdad. He was traveling to answer a summons from his father Timur at the time of his death.
At the Battle of the Kondurcha River in 1391, Umar Shaikh Mirza I commanded the left wing of the Timurid army. His contingent was separated from the main force and nearly overrun before Tokhtamysh abandoned the field under attack by Timur. The battle's death toll was estimated at 100,000 men and women.
The birth order of Umar Shaikh Mirza I relative to his brother Jahangir was never definitively resolved. Two separate chronicles bearing the title Zafarnama, by Nizam al-Din Shami and Sharaf al-Din Ali Yazdi, supported Umar Shaikh as the elder.
Umar Shaikh Mirza I is buried in the Tomb of Jahangir, part of the Dorussaodat mausoleum complex in Kesh, the city now called Shahrisabz. The tomb is described as the best-preserved section of the entire complex.
Umar Shaikh Mirza I fathered many children. Among them were Pir Muhammad (1379-1409), Iskandar (1384-1415), Ahmad (1385-1425), Bayqara (1393-1423), and Rustam (1381-1424/5). Pir Muhammad inherited his father's governorship of Fars after Umar Shaikh's death in 1394.
