Toshio Suzuki is a Japanese film producer and the chairman of Studio Ghibli. He is a co-founder of the studio and has served as producer or co-producer on nearly all of its major films, from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind through The Boy and the Heron in 2023.
Toshio Suzuki was born in 1948 in Nagoya, in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He studied literature at Keio University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1972.
Suzuki first approached Miyazaki for an article in the inaugural issue of Animage, the animation magazine where he worked as an editor. Miyazaki declined that first request, but a second approach after the release of The Castle of Cagliostro led to a lasting professional relationship.
Suzuki was instrumental in getting the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga published and its animated film adaptation made; the studio was founded in June 1985 following that film's release. Miyazaki has stated that without Suzuki, Studio Ghibli would not have existed.
In October 2023, Studio Ghibli was acquired by Nippon Television Holdings and became a subsidiary of the broadcaster. Following the acquisition, Toshio Suzuki became chairman of the studio.
Suzuki produced or co-produced a large portion of Studio Ghibli's output, including Kiki's Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Earwig and the Witch, and The Boy and the Heron, among others.
