Toei Animation was established on the 23rd of January 1948 by Kenzō Masaoka and Sanae Yamamoto. The founders originally named the studio Japan Animated Films before it became part of Toei Company in 1956.
The headquarters remain in Nakano, Tokyo while production studios operate out of Higashiōizumi, Nerima. Additional domestic facilities include an Osaka Studio established on the 26th of August 2025 to recruit artists from the Kansai region.
Galaxy Express 999 won the Animage Anime Grand Prix award in 1981 followed by Saint Seiya in 1987 and Sailor Moon in 1992. These awards recognized the studio's growing influence during the 1980s and early 1990s.
An unauthorized third party attempted to hack Toei Animation's network systems on the 6th of March 2022 resulting in temporary suspension of online stores and databases. The company announced resumption of broadcasting anime series including One Piece on the 6th of April 2022 after confirming a targeted ransomware attack.
On the 5th of June 2025, the company announced Eterna Animation as a new label focused on original works with their first project Foxing set for release during 2026. They also established the Osaka Studio on the 26th of August 2025 to build ties with local communities and reduce reliance on Tokyo-based facilities.
